Hi all,
I have been lurking around here for a while. I decided to take the plunge and build an AK. Right now I am looking at the AMD 65 kit from Centerfire, and an OOW receiver. I am a little concerned about the legality here since the barrel is short. I can build this kit on this receiver as long as they sell it to me as a stripped receiver right? Or do I have to get the FFL to call it a pistol receiver? Any reason this receiver is not a good choice? Thanks in advance for all replies!

Depends are you making a rifle or pistol??

For a rifle you'll need one of those Tapco extended flashhider which are $25 that you HAVE to silver solder or weld on the end of the barrel.

For a pistol you'll have to buy the receiver like pistol. Not too clear on this either someone will chime in with better info. You will have to remove the forward pistol grip and lose the folding stock to make a pistol build also. Plus side is you dont need any compliance parts.

Thanks. I want the pistol configuration. I would like to keep the stock though if possible.
EDIT: I think the extension might be the way to go

Pistol means short barrel and NO stock.

If you want to keep the folding stock you will either go the complicated and expensive, but fun route of making an SBR(short barreled rifle). Or you can build a 922r compliant rifle. Which means adding a permanent muzzle extension, and adding U.S. made parts(6 on an AMD 65 including the receiver and muzzle device).  So with an OOW receiver, and a US muzzle extension, and a US FCG, and then a US pistol grip OR gas piston you are legal.

Also all receivers from OOW can be built into a rifle or pistol and it DOES NOT matter what it is listed as on the 4473.

Thanks guncrazy223. I wasn't really clear on the stock thing. I do recall seeing some info about legally building an SBR, but it seems easier at this point to go with the extension. This is my first build ever, so I expect that it may not be perfect, but I would like for it to at least be legal.
Thanks for all the help so far everone!

just add the extend muzzle break from tapco. not to offend anyone ,but an amd65 sure does make an awfully big and clunky pistol. makes a desert eagle look like a sub-compact,besides its alot more accurate with the stock. the only difference between the sbr and one with a permanently attached muzzle break is roughly 1.5".Is this worth $200, finger printing, and approval from your local police chief? IMO HELL YES! ( if your bulding an ak74u)by the way dont forget about the roughly 4 month or better wait for approval maybe. good luck with your build.
