so I was over at my favorite shop this afternoon and while I was rummaging  around for a package of hollow points for a pistol, the owner and I got to talking about AK47’s as I mentioned to him that I was looking for a ‘Winter Project’ and I asked him what he knew about AK47’s in a kit form? as I’ve been looking at them a bit on-line, but know little about them.

he told me that he’d picked up a few kits a long time ago and that he would let me one at a good price if I was interested.

so my question is: does anyone know anything! about these AMD-65 kits? and if so; are they worth even messing around with?

I looked over the bag of parts pretty good and I have a fairly strong mechanical background so I’m quite confident that I can eventually find the “end zone” without to much trouble (I think?)

so after looking over the ‘parts kit’ closely; I did notice a few things about this AK variant that are significantly different than the WASR that I own; I know the barrel is 12.6in in length and that it has a large threaded on muzzle break that can be removed by simply pressing the spring loaded  pin past the keeper and unthreading the bulky break if a guy wanted to install say a slant break or something else? there is one other difference that I noticed about this kit and that is on the handguard area, it has a pistol grip mounted to the lower portion of the rail; so if I were to build it as a pistol I would be bound by law to remove the FVG, but after looking it over closely I see no screw or fastener securing the grip to the rail?

so knowing that the barrel is 3.7” to short for a ‘Rifle’ I would be willing to build it as a “pistol” rather than adding an extended section to the barrel; this would require me to have the stamped receiver registered as a pistol if I was to pursue the AK kit build.

the price he quoted me for the kit has me interested and I’m sure I can find a receiver easily enough at one of the local gunshows.

AMD-65 Hungarian 7.62 x 39mm
Stamped Receiver, Plastic Grips, folding stock, steel ventilated lower forend, 12.6 inch barrel, large muzzle break designed to reduce muzzle climb and recoil. The AMD-65 is two pounds lighter than a typical AKM. A short-barreled weapon designed for use by tank crews and airborne troops. AMD means Automata Modositott Deszant (Automatic Modified Paratrooper)

any advice or suggestion would be greatly appreciated

I had one years ago....BIG FIREBALL!

If you build it as a rifle, you have to weld/blind pin an extended muzzle brake (they sell 'em to look like the original, except for the extra 2 1/2"

If you make it as a pistol, you can't add the front vertical grip (unless you do AOW paperwork)

Lots of fun, mine was a rifle with a BIG FIREBALL when shooting it (did I mention that already? )

The side folding stock will need a small notch cut out of the receiver, no big deal. I didn't care for the wire stock, but some seemed to prefer it.

I’m definitely going to build it as a ‘Pistol’ … right now I’m in search of a good receiver and the hardware as I will be building it with ‘screws’

has anyone ever purchased from Marsh Hawk Arms LLC ? … I see from their address that they are in LaCenter, Wa. … I emailed them this afternoon, I’d really like to order it up from them and pick it up directly as they are fairly close.

also I’d really like to know the “Rules of the game” i.e. meaning … I’ve heard that the ATF rules 922(r) are significantly different, depending on if you are build a Rifle vs. a Pistol as far as the “compliant parts” are concerned? is this a true rumor? or a fact? or a gray area?

So far all I’ve done is started removing the parts I can’t have such as the forward VPG and I’ve also started removing the rivets in preparation for the drilling and tapping.

Question: do these things have chrome lined barrels?

Rifle = compliance parts

Pistol = none needed

Don't know about the chromed barrel, iirc it does.

Never dealt with Marsh Hawk.

Pookie has the template for the stock cutout if you decide to build it as a rifle: Pookie

cool thanks for the link to the drawing, but I’m definitely going to build this AMD kit to a pistol configuration.

BTW: do you have any more drawings like that of the entire receiver.

You can try Pookie's website, IIRC I think he does.  AKbuilder might have them too.  I know the rear trunion holes are slightly different, but I think the front are the same as most AKs.

I was going to say about the NDS6 but you found it.
That's a nice looking kit, what did you pay if you don't mind?

Did you get the front grip off yet?
The bottom of the grip comes off (on the sides near the bottom you'll see a hole, push something in there to push the thing out of the hole) and there's a srew up in the grip that holds it on.

You don't need any 922r parts for a pistol like mentioned, just get the semi trigger group and use everything else from the kit.

Cope's has a pistol trunion to fill in the rear of the receiver.

Here is a picture of my AMD 65 Pistol.  Great fun to shoot.  Big Fireballs.  Enjoy yours.  This one has TAPCO Grip and fore end.  The Saw grip is a lot more hand filling and makes handling a bit eaiser.
