Normally I am a AR15 or FAL type shooter but saw a TGI FEG AMD 65 for a decent price and decided to pick one up.
Price was $439.00 at Buds Gunshop. Today it arrived and i am actually impressed by how it looks for an AK47. I have owned a few AK47's in the past but they seemed more crudely built than this particular model. Trigger is very nice for an AK47....Tapco of all places did a great job with the fire controls. Got lucky with no canting whatsoever on this rifle. I have done some research on these and still need your opinions on a few questions. Will the tack welded muzzle break fail or should I just take it to someone to weld better to insure no problems down the road with it? I have no need or desire for an SBR so no comments on that are needed. Does anyone have the receiver block to convert too an ACE folding stock? If so how do you like it? I am thinking of going this route. Anyone have an idea on where to get better grips for this that will work that have finger grooves in them? I was thinking Hogue in the back and something else up front. What are the better rail type systems you have used for these AMD 65's and how much work is involved to convert them over on this model? Pictures of your efforts would be helpful if you would please...I will probably put a Primary Arms multi Dot on this..Not sure how to post pics of mine as I received it but I will try after I have time. Other than the muzzle break tack weld I am really quite impressed with this weapon and if it shoots decent I may get another....For some reason I always need two or more of a rifle I like:) Pictures and comments would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I just recently purchased a AMD-65 as well. 150 rds. and the tack weld broke. My gas system is a little out of spec. The gas block is too close to the rear sight block. I guess they cut the gas tube down at the factory so it would fit.
I don't know how many hours I have spent in the last week researching ways to modify this gun. So I think I am qualified to help you out. Krebs Customs has a reciever block so you can mount a ACE stock. Its expensive($90) and ugly but its the only option. I plan on ordering one this week along with a Ace Modular folding stock. Optic mount options: -Ultimak gas tube rail(the least epensive and my personal favorite) Some optics won't stand up to the heat. My Bushnell TRS-25 has had no problems on a Ultimaked Yugo AK. -M.I. Universal AK handguard or just about any AK quadrail. But I would stick with M.I. if you want to go that route. They also have optic specific top covers instead of a picatinny rail so you can cowitness the optic with the irons. Counts as 1 922r compliant part. They are heavy, bulky and tacticool. -TWS Dog Leg rail. Takes the place of the dust cover and the quality is great from what I have seen. My buddy seems to be happy with his. Joseph |
