I may get flamed for this but whatever.
I do not like AK47/variants. To me, and my perception they kick like a bee stung mule (and I am not recoil shy, and routinely shoot a 6.5 45/70 and 3 inch Magnum buckshot) I have combat pistols that I could achieve better 5 shot groups with from the same bench rest at 100 yards (Sig 229). Ergonomically, they are appear off to me, and are for me. Somewhat difficult sights, etc. I sold the one I had owned previously years ago. Well ,recently I started seeing a pretty cool AK, for around $400, which compared to most others at $550-700, at least looked like it would be a fun range toy. Also, I got the idea I needed a gun that could sustain a "throw it down the driveway look."  and wanted to play with duracoat, maybe take a carbine class, run the snot out of it, etc.
Then started hearing lots of positive press (to include here obviously), not to mention it was seemingly "...the most accurate AK" or "...one of the most accurate AKs I've ever owned." I also saw there were options to remove the wire stock, and add AR style buffer, etc. So I bought- ($450 with credit card shipped). Welp, took my new AMD-65 out the other day. It was cold and overcast, on the threshold of raining with winds 5-20 miles per hour. Not the best bench day with open sights! I pulled out what was left of my 20+ year old brick of Wolf steel polymer coated 12X grain "hollow points" loaded the magazine, and spent a portion of the day trying to get the sights on. Of course it never jammed, has a decent trigger, and was the lightest recoiling AK I'd ever shot (I may have converted one other range guy who had the same laments as I did previously, so I let him shoot it, and he actually began considering getting one). It will also bump fire pretty easily if you are not judicious with your trigger press. The stock is a little rough to get any type of weld on-but knew that already, and the magazine well is tight, but got better as plastic mag got shaved unloading/reloading 
Still chasing my now 100 yard zero it was time to go when I shot a 100 yard group that looked pretty good. And then fired another one from the sandbags, as quickly as I could acquire the sights/target as best as I could, which caused me to aim a few inches low FWIW). I will try to go and do a 10 shot group another day, but felt pretty satisfied with the below from a 12 inch barreled AK Still messing with the sights left vs right I managed this group, with one big fat flyer: 
**Question, looking at the primer strikes, are those normal? They are wide, but appear shallow?** Overall VERY impressed with it, and I plan on keeping and modifying it to better suit myself and my ergos. |
| I would try to zero it at 50 with the rear sight on '1'. That old Russian ammo is not accurate enough for sighting in - I know because I did the same thing. After changing to Yugo M67, I was able to shoot into a 2" ball at 50. You'll find that then moving to the 100 range, you'll be pretty close. Of course, you'll have to clean for corrosive ammo after using Yugo. A great alternative is Golden Tiger, which is said to be as accurate as Yugo but non-corrosive. Looking at your target, I would push the front sight a hair RIGHT and screw the sight post a little DOWN to get closer to the center. If you stick a 2" day-glo circle in the center of your black target, it's much easier to get more accuracy. Like they say, 'Aim small, miss small'. |
