Part I: There are currently two different rear sight blocks listed on K-VAR. One is for a Bulgarian AK, the other for a Romanian AKM. They can be seen here. My question is, which one of these would be a suitable replacement on an AMD-65? Don't ask why. It has to do with disassembly of my third kit, poor lighting in my garage and the infernal barrel pin. Part II: Never mind. I had another beer and thought about it for a while and I think I've got a fix for the bent sight block. Let's see if this sounds okay to you guys. The sight block has been straightened and it looks really good except for an inch long crack running from the semi-circular cut-out that mates with the top cover. The crack runs almost straight forward and is confined to the LH sidewall of the rear sight block. There is pleanty of material all around it. Do you think it would be acceptable to stop drill the end of the crack to ensure that it doesn't continue and then simply braze over it it with something like silver soilder? I don't think this area sees much in the way of stress but the repetative action of the gas piston through the block coupled with the recoil I'm sure will create a good bit of vibration. Anyway, what do you think? Is this fixable? |

I say...Go for it. The rear sight block does not experiance any forces when shooting. The only pressure against it is the top cover. As far as the carrier, it just passes through the block. One thing about silver solder is that it won't take phosphating or bluing, paint is okay. Clean thoroughly and then fill the area with the silver solder, sand to contour. You shouldn't have any problems. |
