So I was cleaning some mags last night, and I noticed that the Yugo BHO mags felt heavier than the Chinese mags i have.
I brought some of each to work today and weighed them to see what the difference was. I thought this could make an interesting thread, and find out what the weight is for some of the other Mags available. So if you want to contribute please feel free to do so. The main reason I even noticed the weight difference is because I have been giving some thought to an AK chest rig. Still trying to decide how many mags would be the best compromise. 3,4,6,8, etc. At close to 2lbs each for yugo 30 rounders filled with Wolf 124 gr HP`s, I`m thinking 16lbs for 8 mags could be a bit much. So I`m just trying to compare the weight of the mags that are available. I know it probably wont make much of a difference, but I didnt see this info anywhere, so for curiosity I would like to compile it here, with your guys help. So if you have some different mags, and could weigh them, that would be great. Steel Yugo 30 rd Mag w/spine : 13.1 oz Chinese 30 rd Mag w/spine : 11.9 oz Romanian 30 rd Mag w/spine : 11.4 oz Chinese/Yugo 30 rd Mag no spine 11.4 oz Hungarian 20 rd Mag w/spine: 9.9oz Chinese 40 rd Mag no spine: 12.8 oz Synthetic/plastic, etc. Thermold 30rd : 5 oz* Tapco 30rd : 7 oz* Bulgarian Waffle 30rd : 9.5 oz* Finnish Waffle 30rd : 6 oz* Polish Flat Side 30rd : 7 oz* Russian Bakelite 30rd : 8.5 oz* thanks in advance. *added by other members thanks Big_Johnson_92 |

As soon as I find a decent scale to use I will contribute, though that may take a while. This is a question I have been wondering about too, as I am also looking into having a carry-rig made, and I really prefer the steel magazines to any other option. I am just getting around to checking out some of the other magazine options out there, as up until now I have exclusively used my steel Chinese magazines from the 90's before they were blocked from further import. I do plan to get some Bulgarian waffle mags, though. Variety is the spice of life, at least when you're an AK lover. |

Taking weight and design into consideration.....I say the best 47 steel mags are Chicoms.....and the best 47 poly mags are Bulgy waffles.
The steel Chicoms are on the lighter weight end of the spectrum and are spineless, so as to prevent getting caught up on clothing, gear, etc. The Bulgy waffles are lighter than steel mags.....spineless.....durable as hell.....and rust proof. I have a variety of different mags from different countries for collector purposes, but if I could only have 1 type of each magazine, it would definately be these two...!!! |

While you don't need my opinion to confirm your own, but I'm in total agreement with you on the above. When it's all said and done, I believe the Chi-Com's "perfected" the steel Kalashnikov magazine. Totally, completely reliable, fairly light-weight and the steel used is TOUGH AS NAILS. I've always been pleasantly surprised just how well put together and reliable Chinese mags really are. Considering I never paid more than $5.00 (usually less, many years ago) for any one Chi-Com magazine, I've never been disappointed. Not to mention the lack of the "rib" on the rear always makes the magazine change easier and faster, I don't know how but for me, it just works They just "feel" right when in use. They will serve me for a lifetime and longer. |
