Mags are real expensive on this one, and seemingly hard to find (other than the clear). It's nearly as expensive as an AR. I guess, a big advantage being that I could shoot the wolf ammo regularly (can't really do that with an AR). Is [?it worth it? Opinions? |
| You can shoot all the Wolf you want in an AR. My RRA eats it like candy. Don't believe all of the hype that you read about Wolf damaging an AR. The hardened steel parts in an AR at so much harder than the mild steel Wolf cases that you have no real cause to worry. Wolf is dirtier than most domestic 5.56 and the 62 grain is a little underpowered. Other than that and the burning piss smell from the powder, it shoots just fine. |
| My friend with a FA M4 averages 3-5,000 rnds of Wolf with no more than a fresh slop of motor oil at each range session before the thing fails to feed due to a filthy chamber. The ammo runs fine. For a cheap flogger 556 AK, see the Russian forum for Saiga details. |
only "repair" I had to make after 10k of wolf was a new extractor and spring. If brass cases would have prevented that is debateable, and at the current $300+/k pricing for brass 223, a $15 extractor is a cheaper option for plinking ammo |
I came to the same conclusion a while back. I've been thinking about selling/trading one of my AR's for a 5.56 AK, but after looking at all the pros/cons I've shelved the idea. I've already got a few dozen AR mags and all my AR's handle cheap Russian .223 ammo without a problem. My 7.62 and 5.45 AK's fulfill my "darker" needs for now. |

How much Wolf ammo can you shoot through your rifle (AR15) before a part will fail? How much is that replacement part going to cost you? How much did you save in buying Wolf over brass cass ammo? I have plenty of inexpensive brass cased .223 but can't bring myself to shooting it with the current prices. I have Wolf .223 I bought at under $100.00 a case. It works in all my .223/5.56 rifles and I will use it and replace extractors as needed. An AR15 barrel doesn't cost that much when you figure in the cost savings using up the older inexpensive steel cased Wolf and Czech ammo I have from years past. When shooting my .223 chambered BWK-92 AK type rifle I could care less if I shoot steel cased ammo in it. The rifle eats it up, cost me only $350.00 and I can sell the mags and parts off at a profit if the rifle ever fails. |
