Does anyone know how Arsenals finish compares to other modern finishes (teflon/moly/ceramic/melonite)?

or,, does anyone know what type of finish they use?

Crappy paint from what I have heard...

The little information sheet that came with my SGL says it's a "military" paint.  It can't be that great, if they only recommend Breakfree CLP and nothing else.  Mine scratches off pretty easily from any metal to metal contact.  The finish is the only thing I can really say bad about the rifle.  I'll probably have it refinished some day.  Read the 3rd page:  Arsenal SGL21

is this the same for their milled guns?

I've had a few Arsenal milled guns [SA93 & SAM7] & was able to spray brake cleaner on them no problem. People say if you spray brake cleaner on the imported stamped guns, the paint will come right off. I've never had a Bulgy stamped gun.  GARY  N4KVE

On some parts...yes. Even so, the enamel on the rest  isn't that great either. GUNKOTE is superior.

Actually, I'm pretty happy with the looks of the finish on my SGL-31.  Does anyone know what kind of finish it is?  Is it just black paint?  And is the finish applied in Izhmash or by Arsenal Inc?

If you clean with some common sense instead of using f7#%&g brakecleaner to clean your weps with they are fine finishes. I'vr got 2 and ZERO finish loss due to cleaning.

I was told that the milled SAM series guns are powdercoated.  That is a very durable finish.  Never had any issues with solvents on my old SAM7.

It's the finish from the Russian factory.  I opted for applying moly resin black semi gloss over parka.

Time to stir the pot.

Would all those who defend the "military paint" finish, still defend it if it were used by Century?  Or would it be used as yet another reason why Century AKs are "junk"?  (not my opinion BTW)

I get tired of those that claim that Arsenals are the end-all-be-all of the AK world.  They have their problems, too.  It's just harder to acknlowledge them when you paid soooo much.

Flame on.

Yes, I would.  I will gladly criticize Arsenal when they need criticizing, but I have never had a big problem with the finishes they use.  Of course, I don't use uber super duper cleaners on my rifles either, just CLP on ALL my firearms, because that is all you really need.

I have found the construct you speak of to be a two sided coin - which you demonstrate clearly.

I have one of those and, sure, it holds up to cleaning, but it's not very scratch resistant.

I read the same thing in a few places.. it said "black powder coat finish over grey phosphate".

What do they really use?

Well, either way, solvents that supposedly melt other Arsenal finishes did zero damage to my SAM7 from 2004.  It was actually more durable than any other factory AK I've handled.  Moving the safety hundreds of times didn't even wear a line in the finish that other rifles have near instantly.

My SA-93 is a good finish. However The SLR 106-UR is spray paint. Carb cleaner strips it. This is good Due to the fact I am going to Molly coat it. I may Park amd then Moly it.

The fact is the factory finnish on my SLR 106-UR is not only paint it is cheap paint.

The Arsenal finish is terrible. I own 3 Arsenals and I love them. Two milled SA M7's and a converted Arsenal Saiga SGL-10. All have been refinished in either Moly over park or Gunkote over park. A refinish such as this makes the gun perfect, as Arsenals are pretty damn good to go out of the box.

The safety wore the finish on my SGL-21 before I ever even fired the thing. Not really a big deal to me, but the finish is about as durable as an ice cube in hell.

Enamel was applied to; Receiver, Barrel Assembly, and sometimes the top cover, but not always. Bulgarian paint on; Gas Tube, Muzzle Nut, Cleaning Rod, Bolt, Recoil Spring Assembly, and Bolt Carrier.
I did have one RPK redone some years back in black powder coat. Big mistake. As soon as the selector line was created, no matter what solvent I used, it began eating the finish away around the scratch. The enamel would get soft when firing and wear in some areas, but stronger than the paint finish on any stamped ARSENAL. Moly Resin 70% mix of Semi-Gloss and 30% Flat will give that Russian look, or HK black GUNKOTE is a good choice as well. GUNKOTE actually has an experimental finish that I've had applied by http://www.Southridgearms.net  to several AK's and other guns that is much more scratch/wear resistant that any other finish I've seen. It's called 762. It's more of a satin black. It actually looks like mud when sprayed, but evens out when dry. Has a soft feel to it too. Though that finish is about twice the cost than regular GUNKOTE.
