So, I don't own an AK but had a question, which types of AK are automatic?  It seems like all the terrorists I see sporting these things are firing autos.  Anyway, If I am totally of the mark here it is just cause I grew up in Comifornia and have never fired an AK.  Now living in AZ I see them all the time at gun shows.  I guess I should pay more attention at the next show.  I have been thinking about getting one.
Thanks in advance
Rich

You aren't gonna find a Full Auto AK laying on a table at a gun show. If you do find a transferable AK-47 machine gun at a Class III dealer it will probably cost around $20,000...

So they do come in full auto though...I thought they all were but the only ones I have ever seen were only semi auto.  Makes sense though if they are that expensive, not just any joe blow will have one.

In general, the AKs available in the US are semiautomatic versions of what were originally designed as fully automatic firearms.  Thus, there are a multitude of "types" of AKs which are capable of fully automatic fire.

They just are not available here in the United States.

Since none of the fully auto versions are available here,  these terrorists you see sporting the fully automatic firearms are either in news reports from foreign countries or in the movies.   Contrary to what one would imagine after seeing a Dianne Feinstein press conference, we just don't have the problems here with fully automatic weapons that they have in third world countries.

Wikipedia has an interesting bunch of pages on the AK series of firearms.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ak47  Visit, read, and follow the links for information on many variations.

Yeah they pretty much all come in full auto.... but the ones in the US sitting in the gunstore are not semi auto only!

It always surprises me how often this question comes up.

Basically what you need to know is any fully automatic firearm inside the US is either owned by a specially licensed individual and cost that person an arm and a leg, or it is illegal. It's the same with ARs as it is with AKs as far as laws regarding fully automatic firearms go.

Pretty much any AK you will ever see is semi auto.

Third world countries don't have problems with fully automatic weapons. Third world countries have problems with evil people who posess fully automatic weapons.

Since most of our AK's were born as select fire weapons and had their guts ripped out before they were imported,
I guess the question should be, which ones aren't?

Which AK variants are manufactured solely as semi only guns?

Saigas come to mind immediately, what else?

From my understanding Romanian G Kits were also originally semiauto only, but then I always wonder why they had to cut the receivers, so I don't know for sure.

The "G" rifles had a semi auto only disconnector. The rifles also had the safety/auto sear, which makes the receiver a "machine gun" in the eyes of the BATFE.

SARs, WASRs, the Arsenal rifles, Chinese ... any rifle with a foreign made receiver was manufacturered as a semiauto only.

oldie but a goodie... or bad...  anyway, iirc, all aks are manufactured auto, but they are demilled and rebuilt as semis.  thats why kits have the sear in them.  wait for confermation before repeating this though.

SARs, WASRs 10s (not 10/63), Arsenals, Chinese, Maadis, (should I go on?) were all made as semiauto rifles.

From birth? Not just rebuilt with different receivers for export?

You don't need to be specially licensed to own a Title II weapon.  You just have to pay a $200 tax stamp plus the asking price on a pre-86 AK.
