So, does this ban barrels that are already in non-sporting configuration? Or foreign barrels altogether?

Because, cant you purchase barrels from Polytech online, but you have to install all the parts like the gas port, FSB and everything? So these wouldnt be non-sporting then right? So then we can still buy these barrels, they just need more work to complete the rifle...along with the work involved in getting it ready to installl, but headspacing as well.

Is this as bad as we thought?

<tin foil hat on>

ATF will no longer approve ATF Form 6 applications for importation of any frames, receivers, or barrels for firearms that would be prohibited from importation if assembled

that is the wording......and there is a conspiracy going on for all the dealers and manufacturers to make every buck they can....they won't tell you exactly what the future has in store so you will buy everything you think you will need now.....kits, rifles, etc.  They aid in the paranoia instead of creating solutions and fully explaining the situation

foreign barrels can be imported now and in the future if they are in a sporting configuration, no threads and no bayonet lug, no accessory lug

veprs, arsenal SLRs, WASRs, and the like are being imported and they still will be imported because they are sporting rifles converted in the united states and compliant with 922r

after you buy all the kits and built rifles you need, and only after, sometime months after january 2006 of next year, eveyone will import neutered foreign barrels and convert them if they are smart, some will try to make US barrels just for shits and giggles, no real reason to do this

legally it isn't that bad, but business makes it bad

1Gunner, I hope you're right.  I thought all barrels would be banned from importation, but this sounds more reasonable.

what documentation you guys want? The wording I actually cut and pasted out of the ATF open letter

think about it....the respective foreign companies are already making neutered barrels for ROBARM, ARSENAL INC, CENTURY INTERNATIONAL..etc by Arsenal, Molot,  and Cigur on their imported rifles.  All these importers have to do is ask for just extra compliant sporting barrels! THE GENIUS OF IT ALL!!

Its damn easy to make a foreign ban compliant sporting barrel......hell there is no extra machining on the barrel.    But alas.....the companies will never tell you this....because they have kits they need to sell today!  They don't want you to know it's not that bad, because it will decrease sales!!!!!

ETA: HELL I forgot Armory USA's bulgarian rifle.....it's imported neutered and converted and will still be imported after January 06, just like the rest of em!!!!!

So, you're saying that I should be able to buy an AK-47 underfolder and an AK-74 side folder with all of the goodies on it after the beginning of the new year?

That depends on the importers getting a clue........they SHOULD be importing sporting barrels (if not they are dumbasses) to go along with the rest of the parts kits....Now since Arsenal of Bulgaria and Romanian Cugir are making sporting barrles for Arenal Inc, Armory, CIA, yadda yadda, and should be able to provide the barrles with dimensions to match their own domestic rifles, then YES......the sporting barrels will be married up with the rest of the kit and then you just have to abide by 922r after you fully convert your barrel.......that would be my plan as an importer or vendor....but they would keep this hush hush for now, IMHO  All this remains to be seen however...but it's 100% doable

Then I may just wait for the underfolder and sidefolder for now and have Troy build up my 2 Krinks and wood stock 74.

Spoke to Jimmy at Global Trades the other day.  They have inbound shipments of complete sporter rifles, which they will convert once they are in-country.  This will be the preffered business model.  The ban doesn't affect the importation of sporting rifles.

So, you could possibly buy a "sporting kit" after the ban and then have it modified with the bayo lug and suppressors or brakes?

I think personally the barrel ban hysterai has died down quite a bit. DPH arms is selling the new rom. kits for $89 again just like a few monthes ago. This was his distributor lowering the prices so scott being a cool guy he is passing the $10 savings to you,. There's yugo kirnks still around for the orignal $479 price. Yugos m70 kits still steadily decreasing in value, the fixed stock m70 is now $90, underfolders $130.

I would like to see some Zastava sporter AKs in the future.

Also a semi-auto sporter rifle in 7.62x54, 8mm, and .308 would be a winner here in the states. I think all that needs down is buzz off the bayo lug and weld on the brake, and get 'em over here.

I guess my question is, would the kits that come in as sporters have bayo lugs?  If not, could they be added?

I have no dog in this fight, but we also have to consider a new and improved Federal AWB.  The Socialists/Communists won't make the same mistakes twice.  Even post-ban style rifles will be a pipe dream.

Right now you can buy full auto replacement part for your registered full auto AK.  Even throughout the assault weapons ban you could still buy front sights and gas blocks with bayonet lugs intact.  I don't think there is as much to this barrel ban as importerts would like for you to think.  Right now people still take Romaninan rifles that are limited to 10 shot capacity and convert them to high cap mags.  Some of these rifles are taken a step further with U.S. parts added and have bayonet lugs installed and the barrels threaded legally.  Same thing will happen to the new imported sporterized barrels.

This deals with barrels/recievers in kits...

This does not affect complete guns.

So, what you will see is the importation and de-sporterization of COMPLETE guns by the likes of Century, et al...

The methods that CAI uses to make their WASRs and SARs legal aren't affected (they don't import barrels or recievers, they import rifles and install US parts while the rifles are technically not 'imported' yet, so that by the time the guns actually come in they are legal....

The real PROBLEM with the barrel ban is WRT guns that are produced exclusively from parts kits, such as FALs and HK knockoffs... That's where the 'hurt' will be felt, not AKs...

The only 'problem' for you AK folks is that your source for high-end AK parts (eg not Romanian) will have to be be RAA Saiga rifles, a/o cut up AKs from the FSU....
