I have a quick question.

I have a rifle that I would like to be able to mount a bayonet on but the lugs have been ground off. Is it legal to add a bayonet lug to a rifle by welding one on? Or do I have to purchase a new front sight assembly?

As long as it is legal to posses a firearm with bayonet lug in your state it is legal to weld them on
ETA: Sorry don't know the laws of MT

I would be confident enough the MT law would be the same.
I highly doubt they (a very gun friendly state) drafted a statute that stopped a person from making a rifle capable of accepting a bayonet.

Aside from your legality to do so (which seems fine for your state), what kind of rifle do you have - that will determine what you need to do in order to build up any extra "meat" to facilitate the proper bayonet.  You asked if you'd have to buy a new front sight base.  Do you have a milled receiver rifle?

You will need the new front sight to hold the cleaning rod not the bayonet. Try Apex for the parts.

This depends on what rifle he has.

For example, a WASR, with the lugs ground off, still has everything needed for the cleaning rod.

I seem to remember a thread a while ago where a member here rebuilt a bayonet lug on his rifle that had been previously ground off.  Turned out real nice from what I remember.

the front site block is fine on a wasr-10, you simply need to re-weld the ears on the sides of the gas block. i've done several and w/ a little grinding and touch up they worked great.
