Not a new builder.. but having a new problem... Just finished up an AMD65. For the life of me, I can't get the bolt and carrier to close in the trunnion. I have determined the following to be true: 1. The Carrier with Bolt binds up about a 1/4" from fully seating in the trunnion. 2. The Carrier without the bolt will close without problem on the trunnion. 3. The Bolt alone will close and lock into the trunnion on a go gauge. 4. They won't do it when assembled. 5. The Bolt when riding in the Carrier is very tight behind the locking lugs and does not seem to be able to lock-up. 6. The Carrier and Bolt will close in a trunnion of a spare kit. 7. I have now spent about a total of 4 hours trying to figure this out to no avail. 8. During the 4 hours of work time.. I walked away each time before becoming frustraded. 9. Number 8 is due to the constant reminder from the Mrs's that I should just walk away. 10. This rifle has not been cut up yet and started over or thrown out in the yard due to Number 9. Any help would be appreciated. |

You say it binds up 1/4 inch from closing. Do you mean that the carrier goes in all but 1/4 inch or the bolt? One thought is that you have an alignment issue between the trunion and the receiver rails. This being the case, the carrier would run ok in the receiver rails, and the bolt could adjust to the misalignment, but all put together, it might bind up. I really can't see how that would happen in a build unless there was machining done to the trunion, or if the front end of the rails that go into the trunion did not line up right. If this doesn't help, take some pics close up of the receiver to trunion areas...it might shed some light. Also what kind of receiver is it? |
Sounds like my first build. I "opened up" the slots in the carrier where the rails go, with a dremmel. Do a little at a time. Good luck. |

It is not a rail issue. the bolt is off the rails and on the trunnion lips.. I have a sneaking idea that the problem lies in the trunnion and bolt lug interface.. Thanks for everyone's help.. I am going to make this my long awaited cut-away. just drop her on the mill and expose her guts... Should be fun!! |

Stick a cleaning rod through the barrel and back through the receiver, as a quick check that everythng is aligned well. If the rod is centered at the back of the receiver, you know you can eliminate alignment as an issue, and focus elsewhere. When it binds up, look at the rail slots in the carrier. Is the carrier pushed to one side or the other? Is it being pushed up against the rails? Are any shiny spots appearing on the trunion or the bolt from contact? If you are not sure, use a sharpie to blacken any shiny areas, and rack the bolt a few times. If there is bad contact, a new shiny area should appear. If you can answer the above questions, I bet that one of us could figure out a solution. |

Didn't learn anything new with the cleaning rod.. The upper rails are not rubbing the carrier.. the ejector has been completely milled off.. when I tried a dummy round that functions in my other builds.. the bolt/carrier stop about 1/2" from fully seating.. This AMD65 is on it's way to be my long awaited cut-away project.. I am just tired of fooling with it and as I still haven't had any roached kits come my way.. I will just do the next best thing.. Thanks all for you help.. I will post pics when I finish milling away to show her guts! |

Socandyman.. couldn't get my grinder to make that angle so I decided to turn down the piston a little.. besides a piston, I can replace! I only turned off a little bit, but it did seem to fit a little bit better... the dummy round would actually chamber by recoil spring tension alone.. the carrier is not smooth going into battery, mind you.. but it does actually function now! I will try taking some more off later and measuring what the diameter difference is from stock. I will report back when I have finished that up tomorrow.. |
| Longboat do the second part of what socandyman said. Just remove the gas tube completely. I had to do alot of work on the replacemt gas tube for my last amd build. It worked fine without the gas tube on so I knew that was the problem. Some time with the dremel sanding wheel and a hand file and she is smooth as butta. |
Huh... show me where.. I wasn't being snotty in my response to you.. I said "read the FAQ's.. the wobble is standard".. I was trying to help you.. Ask around, I am not the stiring type, and am more than happy to help others along the way.. However all you have done is made yourself look like an asshat, comming in my thread dropping a stupid response.. Grow up.. ETA.. I just have to say RTO.. I have built something near 60 kits between myself and helping friends.. a bunch of which are on this board.. This is the first failure to function I have experienced.. I was befuddled.. I needed help.. this was not some Noob, too lazy to search for the answer... I have no problem helpling out people, even you.. |
