I'm thinking hard about building my first AK, and I want a folder.  I was wondering what everyone thinks is the best kit for the money...

I've seen the yugo's, polish, and romainian at various places.  I'm just not sure which one to get.
For what its worth, I will probably build on a DCI or Armory receiver.

although just about everyone will concur that a folder is not the best to start with, i would say go for the polish. they're gonna be a nicer kit condition-wise and will have chromed bores. not to mention the fact that if you want to give it a shot you can bend your own receiver.

i dont know if you know it or not, but the yugos use a special (and some what expensive if you go for a 100%) receiver so you need to either modifiy it (i dont recommend it personally) or build from an 80% or 100%.

also the polish ones will probably have the majority of their finish intact (dont know for sure about the yugos, but im guessing that they've been really heavily used and the finish left is minimal) so you'd only have to deal with finishing the receiver. that would save some work and it'd be pretty easy.

another thing to consider is this. you can get a romy G kit for right around $100. they're fixed stocks, but if you really want a folder and don't mind a side-folding stock you can switch one out later on. so basically you get all the ease of building from a fixed-stock romy, plus you can have a folding stock on it later for right around $60, IIRC.

hope this helps and hope you get an AK (whatever kind it is) soon!

Well, I already have a nice fixed stock vector.  I really don't see the need to have multiple rifles of the same caliber/configuration sitting around.  So thats the reason I was wanting to get a folder.  I originally wanted a 74 style side folder, but found the underfolder kits to be a little more affordable.

While I haven't personally built one, I have a friend that built one not to long ago, so I wouldn't be flying totaly blind.  I am aware that the yugo's fave a different front trunion, and I've read that DCI makes a good receiver for them.

I've been reading these forums for several months now, I'm just a little nervous about spending hard earned money on something that I'm not completely sure about.  I think most people can understand that.

Do any of the receiver manufactures have receivers with the holes for the rear folder already cut.

For my first kit build, I really didn't want to build from a flat.  But if I could find someone local to the Indy area who could help me bend/weld/heat treat one I'd be interested...

The easiest UF for you to build would be a Yugo UF since the DCI Yugo receivers already have the trunnion holes pre-drilled and the UF holes cut out.  Drilling your own holes isn't really that difficult to do.  Neither is cutting out the UF holes in the receiver.  Having someone help you through your first build is really helpful.  After your first build, you'll probably realize that it isn't rocket science to put one together.

Global Trade has one that is not listed, $50 extra when I bought.  Holes are close but will require some filing by hand.  They are currently moving buildings so that might slow things down.  I have built two 1mm receivers and one 1.6mm receiver.  Stick with the 1mm it's lot easier.

Edit: for Polish

Crap! I asked that question a week ago (where to get a 100% polish underfolder receiver) with no replies so I went out an bought a spot welder because I thought noone was making receivers for polish underfolders.

Ah well... almost done with my underfolder receiver anyway... guess I might as well take advantage of the spot welder and build a Rommy G

You will be happier with your first build if you get a 100% receiver from global and build it.

There is so much more to building from a flat than simply bending and drilling some holes.  The holes usually need to be perfect and that requires a lot of filing, etc, top rails need to be cut, extractor cut, rails hardened, etc, and it ends up taking a LOT longer and is a lot more expensive (in tools) than you first expect.  Just cutting the underfolder holes in a regular blank was a pain in the butt.  My hand went numb from dremeling for so long.

Building from a flat isn't all that hard, but it is time consuming, especially if you don't have jig which makes nice pretty bends every time.

Be aware that there is no universal UF receiver, and that any of the UF kits you pick will require a specific, dedicated receiver (if you want a receiver already set up for the kit rear block and UF parts).
We are working with DCI to have dedicated receivers for all of the various UF kits.
Thanks.

Yes,
Harlan, most of us are aware and awaiting your NDS-1 shell to do our Polish builds on. If we really wait, you will probably have the shell milled with all the underfolder holes in place. I would wait guys unless you have or have access to a mill to mill out the holes in a hardened receiver. Flats are easy to dremel out, hardened steel is not.
