I just received a slightly used WASR 10 from a private individual. It's my first AK and my first impression is good. The overall fit and finish is actually better than I expected.
I disassembled it and gave it a good clean and lube. The question is this.

I'm trying to disassemble the bolt, but can't remove the firing pin retaining pin.
The exit hole for the pin was at first invisible. I finally saw the outline of it and the edges appear to have been fully blended in with the surrounding bolt metal during the finish process. I used a punch to try and lightly drive the pin through, but no luck.
What am I missing here? Advice please?

Thanks,

Keith

Complete Sov AK armorer's manual here: www.box.net/shared/wfnjbu204s

Your rifle is a Century product, which means they could have assembled the bolt in any number of haphazard, non-standard ways, including welding. Good luck and remember to check headspace when you replace your bolt with a new one...

Thanks for the link to the manual. There's a wealth of
information there that I know will come in handy.

"can't remove the firing pin retaining pin"

Drive pin from BOTTOM to TOP.  First, soak bolt in KROIL overnight.

If you start bending punches & it just won't move?  Drill the bastard out (Cobalt, slightly undersized - and use a press).  Make sure to chase the channel well to insure all fragments are gone.  Remove FP, and wrap a little fine auto sandpaper around a punch.  Rotate this in the FP channel around where the pin goes thru (remove any mini-burrs from drilling).  Re-insert FP, install new pin.

Rom bolts OFTEN have really NASTY FP retaining pins:  I think they drive them in with Sledges.  NOW is the time to make sure yours is right, because someday, you will need to detail clean the bolt.

Tried everything other than drilling it out. I don't have the press needed to drill it, but I've got a machine shop close by that will help. Are new pins for these standard size
among all AK variants, or due I need a certain size?

Pins are standard.  Now, if you have a shop do this?  BE SURE to instruct them that you do NOT want that pin hole to be any bigger than it is now :)

Also - get a new Firing Pin (they are cheap).  Odds are good that a shop will nick yours in this process.

I may try drilling the "blind" end first where the outline of the pin is barely visible, then try to drive the pin out starting from the other end where it's clearly visible.
Is there any reason that the firing pin retaining pin has to come out first? Can the extractor pin be removed first? I need to check it also to see if it's stuck.

The axle pin for the extractor is retained by the FPRP. You can't remove the axle before removing the FPRP unless something is seriously wrong with your bolt. BSW

The end that terminates the pin is the blended one on the cam lug.  It must be driven from the opposite end.

It is not necessary to dissasemble to bolt for routine maintainence.
