So please tell me what bolt hold components are and what they are used for.

The magazine follower is what holds the bolt open on the last shot. There are threads in the "magazine" section of this site on how to make your own. Once you do that you can buy or make a notched selector lever to hold the bolt when you dump the mag. Now stop being lazy and look around/search

No, you can use regular magazines that do not hold the bolt open if you'd like.

As you were not specific on what type of bolt hold open devices I thought I would add the version that the Russian Saiga rifles have.  The components for this is a spring and a stamped part that engages with the bolt carrier.  Your receiver has to be modified for the button to protrude from.  It pivots on the hammer pin.  This will not hold your bolt open after the last shot, it needs to be manually engaged.  Good for inspection purposes and at the range during a cease fire.
