I have a couple of the Center Fire under folder kits and I'm having a problem pressing the barrel out of the front trunnion. The barrel pin came out with a hammer and punch. I then tried pressing the barrel out with a HF 12 ton press but the barrel won't budge. I've flattened a bunch of pennies working on this. Any ideas? I did a Romanian at the same time and the barrel pin was the pain in that one; the barrel pressed out relatively easy. |
| My son and I had the same problem over Christmas break. We just kept smashing pennies and it finally popped and came on out. We did put a small place in the chamber but an ever so lite touch with the dremmel and it was good to go. Our barrel pin came out with a punch and hammer also but the barrel was something else. Good luck with the pennies. I'd put several in there so as not to do what we did. |
| I have put in two barrells with a hammer but takes some finnese if that word can be used in the same sentence with BFH.....but what I did was line up barrell with SB put muzzle on wood then use a piece of aluminum to pound on so as not to damage anything... place it on the trunnion where the bolt carrier strikes it alternating between both sides and bring it down evenly and slowly...one thing it will do is try to rotate a bit so change sides every other smack or so.....will work and did not harm trunnion...worked for me but all disclaimers apply |

I've only done 2, a Yugo underfolder, and a cheapo Romanian. But I tried removing the barrel cross pin, with a hammer and a punch with no success. Get one of those Harbor Freight 12 Ton presses, and if you catch it on sale, it's about $110! Worth every penny for pin and barrel removal, and you can get a jig and bend your own flats with it! As for barrel replacement, I froze the barrel in the fridge, and heated the receiver/trunion in the oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes each. You have to work fast, but they both when back with very little effort, only a few taps with a rubber mallet. With the right tools, AK building is really fun and pretty easy. I wish I had more time and money to get more kits. |

Had to buy a press $87 from Northern Tool, the store accepted their internet special. Homier has them for $50 but shipping is high if you cant get to their sales. Of 5 Romys and a Tantal, one Romy came apart with hammer and punch, the others needed a vise, push pins, hammer for the pin and the autozone pully puller for the barrels, except for 1 that just didn't want to come out - needed a press. Make sure you have a straight push on the barrel to get it out. I used nickles - just as soft as pennies but wider and thicker. And I squashed a penny down and used it to shim the extractor cut on the barrel breech face. Otherwise the push of the press is at an angle and the barrel may seize up in the trunnion. The freezing, cold, then BFH didn't work - just no clearance on the 1st Romy I built. Used the press to put the barrel the rest of the way in. And heat and soaking in PB Blaster was useless in taking them apart. |
