We'll I've never owned a SKS before but for soon reason the bug has bit me, I found centerfire systems has Chinese ones for 290$. I know not to expect a beauty but what could I expect if I bought one (rough looking in picture)? What about quality?  It will just be a range toy so the stock doesn't matter to me as long as it functions and is sound. http://www.centerfiresystems.com/SKSGUN-56-2.aspx

The one in the picture is what you want. It may or may not be what you get. The SKS is a descent rifle for it's age and vintage given that it was manufactured by communist slaves on hand me down Soviet machinery. You might be able to squeeze 3MOA out of it.

SKSs are easy to find at local pawn shops. Look around and you can find a like new norinco commercial for $300ish.
I bought a type 56 as pictured on CFS, they are rough, very little finish, wood is very rough. I like it that way because I am a collector, but if you are a first time buyer I'd get a good commercial model.
