My century m74 has started to develop problems at the 800 rnd mark. The rifle functioned very well for the first 700 or so rounds. I then had problems with cases getting stuck and keyholing issues when the barrel would heat up. My questions are-
Is it worth trying to replace the barrel?
I see alot of barrels for sale but I am not sure what barrel to buy?
Is this something any gunsmith can do or do I have to send it to someone?
If it is worth replacing I cannot go to crazy on how much I spend as this rifle was intended to be a cheapo beater range fun gun. Thanks

Sorry to hear you are having problems, some of the Tantals use to have the same problem with keyholing.  You can try different ammo, sometimes the Tantals would keyhole with one brand of ammo but not another.  I'm guessing this is made from a Bulgarian kit?  I would check around with different AK smiths about how much it cost before I bought a replacement barrel, haven't seen any original commie barrels in awhile, you may be able to find a US replacement barrel.  Good luck.

Try a real thorough cleaning of the chamber and bbl and check the crown (remove the brake). If your crown somehow got nicked, a  little valve grinding compound and a round head brass bolt, chucked in a drill, may fix it. Even a non chromed US bbl shouldn't shoot out in only ~800 rounds. If you do need a rebarrel, a decent smith should be able to do it. Try a Green Mountain chrome lined bbl. I've heard they're good. Can't say how much it'll cost. Get a quote on the labor and try to find a bbl yourself.

Thanks for the advice guys gonna try shooting the rifle this weekend after a really good cleaning. Also going to order some different ammo as well. It seemed strange to me the barrel worked well at first but at less than 1000 rnds would start to keyhole.

Not really strange. Contrary to the current Kool-aide Century has produced and produces a lot of bad products. The M74 was yet another one that were produced using US barrels that were out of spec because they used 5.56 blanks. It was kind of a big issue in the '10-'11 range.
