Got a wild hair last night to change out the front end on the SA85M from 'AK-63' to original. I also have an 'AMD-65' so I was asking myself why I needed two 'AMD'-style set-ups. So, this...

Or this....

What do y'all think?

Go with whatever is most comfortable to shoot.  I don't care for the forward grip, makes mag changes tougher and just doesn't feel go to me.

Funny thing, I like the forward grip. I don't know, it's so quick to change them back and forth I guess I'll keep doing a Favre on it. The big deal was making the naked gas tube, but once you have that, you can swap out the front end in five minutes.

I like the bottom one much more than the top.

Personally, I like the 63 setup. You don't see too many like it.

Standard forearm is much better looking in my book.

I have resisted doing that because the rifle is so perfect, being completely made in Hungary (except for the 922 stuff I had to put in when I took off the thumbhole stock). However, and somewhat strangely, I was just thinking before opening this thread that I should go ahead and get a sight base and gas block from an AMD-65 and get my local AK builder to put them on. This would require a refinish to match up all the different colors/textures, but I've been wanting to do that too. This would simply be a satin black bake-on coating. A small point, but it does have a cleaning rod, and the sight base does have an indentation for retaining the head of the rod, but it doesn't work very well so I leave the rod off. Hey, I might as well finish the job I started in 1995 with this FEG.

Whatever works for you.  I still need to change my NIB SA-85M over, but I have decided she will not be a Safe Queen any longer, she's going to be a shooter.

I like the lower picture of the standard AK look.  I have the same SA85m and want to convert and was curious what parts you switched out?  What brand stock set is that and where can I get it.  That is exactly what I was looking for!

All the wood is original FEG. The handguards are the originals that came on it and the buttstock and pistol grip came off a pre-ban SA85M. I got the stock here on the EE. The blonde Bulgarian stocks widely available match pretty well but have the groove cut in the sides. The Hungarian wood pistol grip is the same for the AMD and usually are on Gunbroker or here in the EE. Whatever stock you get will probably require some fitting. Be careful how you sand the tenon that goes into the receiver - if you sand it unevenly, the stock will be crooked, and you also don't want it to be too loose.
