I thought there was a thread on this but I couldn't find it the other day. I will be getting my Yugo soon and want to prepare for the gunk. Should I dip the affect parts? Soak? Or just clean with a rag soaked in mineral spirits? Thanks for any input.

I've heard you can soak all the metal parts in mineral spirits, but i just cleaned mine all with a lot of rags and carb cleaner. Worked fine for me.

I used mineral spirits. They should tack a thread about cosmo in this forum.

I used mineral spirits also for the whole gun. It took care of everything.

Get a bucket and a 5 gallon jug of the stuff and plan on 3 hours of wiping down you new baby....

Agreed. Ok just wanted to make sure mineral spirits would be ok. Is there anything particularly tricky I need to watch out for when disassembling? I have the link to the surplusrifle.com page.

As for the stock, I'm not looking to spend 5 hours making it pristine so what's a quick way to clean the grease and gunk off it? I was thinking of sanding it with very fine sandpaper then using wood varnish or something similar to make it look nice and keep gunk out. Any additional suggestions would be helpful!

Anyone ever tired using ether on it?

Although last time I cleaned stuff with Ether I got messed up and ended up watching Brother Bear.

Damn so it's gonna be hard... Just kidding of course... Just wanted to know in advance so when I finally have it in my hands I can tackle it w/o any problems.

Make sure to strip the bolt and clean the cosmo 100% there. Also make sure you clean the gas piston too. I take a metal coffee can and soak my metal parts in mineral spirits and user a small brush. The stock can be wiped down with mineral spirits and I also made a pan with aluim.foil to soak&brush the stock with rubbing ach.

I used Easy Off on the stock, just once, then wiped with mineral spirits and a rag.

For the metal, I used a degreaser I found in the gun cleaning section at Sportsman's Warehouse, and it works pretty good.   Lots of paper towels, lots of elbow grease.

A little shot of Easy Off on parts with thick caked on Cosmo helped a lot.

Great, good to know mineral spirits is safe on the stock. I was a bit worried it wouldn't be. Picked up a 3qt jug of mineral spirits and a can of linseed oil today. Right after I filled out the paperwork at the gun shop hey but with bayonet . They had the ones with dark stocks or the tan stocks but with the darkwood part above the barrel which looked a bit mismatched. I still chose the tan one however because I like the looks of that better.

I got a couple stock sets from AIM surplus ($10 each).  They appear to be European Walnut, and look decent.  One has a knot on one side of the buttstock, and one has a little crack in the grain, but other than that, they look OK.  They have some sort of oil finish on them, but if you strip it and lightly sand, then use BLO, they should look pretty nice.
