(Put this in here because noone goes in the cleaning forum)

I use an old cleaning rod from my AR for my AK74 and I find it hard to get in from the receiver end due to the top of the buttstock.

So the rod scrapson the back of the receiver and gets bent a little. The only solution I can think of is to go from the muzzle end, but I don't want to damage the crown.

Any suggestions.

I would prolly just get a bore snake and call it a day but I use corrosive ammo so I have to be thorough.

Isn't that what the top of the standard cleaning kit, with the little hole in it is for? I thought it was specifically designed to protect the muzzle when cleaning muzzle to receiver. Not sure if your cleaning rod would fit in the hole though.

Buy a short stainless steel or coated rod, and a brass or plastic cone-shaped muzzle protector from Brownell's.

One friend made a brass receiver protector that fits over the rear of the receiver to protect it from the rod rubbing.
He uses a .22 caliber rod so it will flex and fit into the bore from the rear.

A good trick is when cleaning from the muzzle is to PULL the rod, not push it down the bore.

Put the rod down the muzzle end with a muzzle protector and screw the brush or patch holder on, but leave it loose by a thread to two.
Use a plastic paint transfer bulb to apply solvent to the brush or patch AFTER you pull it into the chamber, then pull the rod forward and out the muzzle.

This eliminates the rod flexing and rubbing on the bore, and prevents dirty solvent from getting sprayed into the receiver.

cheap and effective solution is to take an empty .223 casing and cut the bottom off and slip this over your rod to act as a muzzle protector - works great!

+1 for otis Just get two cables one for the brush and one for the patch. Things go a lot faster.

Hmmm, Gonna think about that Otis. But in the meantime some good suggestions fellas, thanks.

Had to make due with the way that I've been doing it for today. I tried going from the muzzle but just having the jag rub against the inside of the muzzle was freaking me out. So I switched back It leaves a little bit of the red covering from the Old Saf T rod I have in the receiver but it's better than F'ing up the crown.

Ya know I thought when I got the AK that clean up was going to be so much easier. Then I bought a ton of corrosive ammo. That coupled with an analness about keeping my weapons clean and now the thing takes me twice as long as the AR!!

At least I had one of the best days ever at the range today. I was shooting great and both the AK and AR were doing their job. Gotta love it. Almost makes cleaning worth it.

+1 for the Otis or commie pull thru.

I only use the rod and butt-stock kit for emergencies.

The Otis clean everything I own. The military kit includes rods and an adapter for AR chambers. BSW

I use one of these for all my firearms cleaning.

It has a bore guide (look above the handle to the left of the oil bottle) that slides onto the cleaning rod. The tapered end goes into the barrel and keeps the rod from contacting the barrel during cleaning.
You can get one at Wal-mart for about $15.
