Hello, first post here.

I've owned 2 AK's in the past that I had to sell due to financial problems and I'd like to get another one.

The 10 rd single stack WASR's are damn near free, so I was wondering if it was legal to enlarge the mag well to accept double stacks.

Will this even work? I've never handled the 10rd variety so I'm not sure if the catch is the same or not.

Cheers,

It is possible but you have to replace 5 parts with US made parts to abide by the 1989 Import law.

I must not understand.

These post ban single stack AK's are gonna need US parts added to make them legal even after they were still legal after the AWB?

only if they have evil parts that aren't US made. You need (7? i think) US parts on an imported "evil" rifle to make it legal. So just switch out the FCG, grip, and stock with US made. Also, this law is pretty much unenforceable. So you could just put foreign made to look like foreign on.

yes, there are multiple bans..there was a ban in 89 that banned the importation of non-sporting guns., usually referred to as 922r, then there was the AWB which banned certain features no matter the origin.  to get around the 922r thing imported weapons need to have a certain number of US made parts.  there is plenty of info on this in the tacked threads at the top of the forums.  It gets confusing and downright agitating sometimes, and only proves that the gun laws were made by people who have no clue about guns.

That is just a quick layman's overview, like I said, there is a bunch of info on here.  Long and short of it, you can convert it, just put the requisite number of american parts in it if you are converting it to a "Non-Sporting" configuration.

I must be retarded or something.Let me get this right. If I buy an AK through, err, say, Century Arms; I'm still gonna have to replace 5 to 7 parts to make it legal?

I may put off buying one for a bit cause with the influx of high cap models, these single stack ones are probleby only gonna get cheaper.

Thanks,

If its already a hi-cap then no, they already replaced the parts when it was imported and converted to hicap. But if you buy a single stack and do it your self then yes you must replace parts.

Since century already made these guns importable (talking about WASR here, not a kit), its already  got the required parts, doesn't it? if so, all it needs is to have the mag well opened up for double stack mags.

No.  The 10-round single-stack rifles are legal to import.  Century didn't have to do anything to make them legal.  The double-stack ones that take standard AK magazines are not legal to import.  That's why they have to replace parts to make the rifle legally considered made in the US.  It's completely screwed-up, but it's the regulations Bush left us with.z
