Was discussing guns with a vet at work and I mentioned I had a couple of AKs.
He's from the old BS camp that thinks all AKs are FA and I said nah, mine are semi and legal. Then he asked what's the difference between the two? what makes one FA and the other semi. This was a question I didn't know the answer to. I shrugged and threw down the rubberstamp answer "the receiver"

From my observations:
Third hole drilled in receiver for additional pin to hold auto-sear trip Right rear side of bolt carrier, semi has the nub milled off that catches the sear trip, full still has the nub Selector stop on the right side for the safety to stop about midway between safe and semi Also, I believe the disconnector and hammer are different That's it in a nutshell. The difference is also 10 years and $250,000k fine if not properly registered. Oh, and price diff. between LEGAL full auto and semi is about $13,000, plus the $200 transfer tax. |

Even if one wanted to risk the jail time being Bubba's boyfriend just to take a shot at big brother, why bother with FA? The "cool factor" of spray 'n pray is meaningless unless you're in the military and assaulting the enemy with entire divisions of troops. You can fire the rifle as quickly as you can pull the trigger, often at a cycle rate of 100 rounds/min or higher. Plus, you'll get greater accuracy. I don't own AKs to show them off. I enjoy them because of their look, reliability, and versatility.
Some guy did a youtube video on how the dias (drop in auto sear) is set up. Since it's legal to own the part in Germany but not to install it on a working AK, he apparently is legally able to record the video and upload it. |

I'm not intending to try to change my AKs to FA. It would devalue the collectibility at the very least, and I know the ramifications of illegal NFA... c'mon son, this isn't my first day on arfcom. I don't own AKs to show them off either, but I don't mind showing them off when they rock, especially the ones I built. |

For a Chicom rifle:
Third pin for the sear. The sear itself. The bolt carrier does have a different groove(for lack of a better term) on the bottom side. there is another notch for the selector lever. The axis pin retaining wire is different as well as it sits on the sear. There is a rate reducer on eurospec rifles, but I am unfimiliar with them. There may be other illegal and unsafe ways to do this but that is how a factory gun works. |
