Okay, DUMB question, but I didn't want to put that in the title.

What's the difference between a SAR1 and a G?

SAR-1s were made for export - no bayo lug, no flash hiders.  G kits come from the Romanian equivalent of the national guard and are complete with the good features - bayo lug and threads/slant breaks.  Other than that, I don't think there is much of a difference.

Oh, the obvious - G kits have the pistol grip forend and laminated stocks.  SARs have non-laminated and regular (no grip) forends.

Exactly - and the fact that G guns were originally full auto!

I'll jump in here.

Is that what the "G" stands for?
Guard or whatever the word is in Serbo-Croation.

I always wanted to know.

Interesting.

The SAR-1 I just picked up has no bayo lug, but does have a threaded muzzle w/slant brake.

Must've been added later?

"G" stands for Garda (singular) or Garzile (plural) which is Romanian for Guard(s), as in the Patriotic Guard.  They speak Romanian in Romania, not Serbo-Croatian.

More info on the Patriotic Guard here....

BTW, These "G" rifles were issued in semi-auto only... not selective fire.  The third pin was there but the disconnector had it's tail cut off.  The patriot guard were civilian soldiers and were not issued selective fire.  If they ever wanted to convert it to selective fire they could just replace the disconnector.  Here is a pic of a "G" rifle that I took at the Romanian National Military museum in Bucharest a few years ago. This particular diplay was for the PG. Note the black band on stock which is another feature unique to the "G" rifle.
