Looking at an AKS-74U kit.  The Krinkov kit I'm looking at has been demilled by having most of the receiver cut away and discarded.  Do I need to have this sent to an FFL?  Can anyone chime in as to at what point I'd need to have an SBR tax stamp for it?

Thanks,

With no intact receiver, it is just a pile of parts and can be sent straight to your house.

No need to do the SBR paperwork until you have a new receiver for the build.  Just have to make sure the paperwork is done and you have the tax stamp in your hand before the new receiver and kit are built into an SBR.

The above is correct, but you can actually ship the SOT dealer/builder your parts kit and receiver in advance of receiving your tax stamp back from BATFE, but the builder cannot legallyh ship the completed SBR back to you until they have a copy of your tax stamp. Depending on current time frames for BATFE and your builder, this may or may not be practical. Back when I was having my SBR'ds built, BATFE time frames were 1-3 months, while my builder time frames were 2-3 months. Just something to consider.....

ATF is running 5+ months right now. Some builders don't want it until you have your tax stamp. Call around to the different builders you have in mind and ask them their procedure.

I just found out that Illinois is a no-SBR state.  The only way I could go through with this is to have it built as a pistol as the ATF won't issue a tax stamp to Illinois residents.  Looks like I found yet another reason to move out of this state.

you could add a perm attached faux silencer and make it a rifle...

Since its a full SBR kit, just go ahead and build it as a pistol and have it converted to SBR when you move to an SBR state. AK pistols are still fun to shoot under 100 yds.

5.45 pistols are bad ju-ju.  If you want to built it and SBR it later, build it as a rifle and have a barrel extension pinned on that is easy to remove when you can SBR it.
