Well, I bought this Chinese SKS more than 15 years ago for $80. It shot and functioned very well as it came to me so it was put in the safe and forgotten. Over time I picked up 30 rnd detachable mags and even came across a 75 rnd drum for it. I took it out the other day to shoot. When I removed the original box mag to allow for the detachable 30 rnd mags and 75 rnd drum it would not feed with either the mag or the drum. When attempting to chamber the first round it would not feed into the chamber, rather it would slam the bullet into the face of the chamber and shove the bullet back into the case everytime. Anyone got a fix for this? Or should I just reinstall the original box mag and have the 30 rnd mags and 75 rnd drum as show pieces or accessories? I hate to put this back in the safe and forget about it for another 15 years as it's a fun (and cheap) rifle to shoot. Again, any fixes for this?

What kind of ammo are you using? When was the last time the rifle was cleaned? My AK had an operating rod that was BLACK from carbon buildup when i bought it.

I have had this problem with a TAPCO 5 rd detachable mag and brass ammo. Wolf goes in fine but use brass and the second round is mashed. And the brass stuff I had was for hunting so it was the $20/box stuff . Well there went a dollar. Coulda bought gas with that.

The Wolf ammo seems to do just fine anyway so I might experiment with the brass in the original fixed mag to see if that changes the problem. Might test it in the 20 rd detach mags I have too.

Well an honest opinion is better than a lie to make you feel better those  30 rd mags and  75 rd drum are more of a miss in most cases than a hit, most of the time you will either get one that works great or in your case not at all,its not your ammo it is the fact your rifle was designed to function with the original mag and stripper clips best,I have a few shooting buddies that have gone through all kinds of after market mags there door stops now. I have  only found one after market magazine that works an thats the Tapco 20 rd other than that I stick with the original.  I take it you broke the rifle down and gave it a good cleaning before  hand that could help want hurt anyways.

I had no other choice than to clean it before I took it out to shoot as when I put it up it was prepped for long term storage. Sounds like I will have to go back to the original box mag and the drum and mags will be conversation pieces! Thanks for the input.

One question are the feed lips on the mag and drum made out of plastic or steel, you can try and tweak the lips of the mag if there steel but if plastic your stuck with what you have.  Another thing is if the stock is pinching the upper part of the mag when inserted and it doesn't slip in smoothly that will cause feed problems also.  Sorry I didn't throw that in last time.
