I just sent off funds\FFL for my first AK.

its an SAR1 with the fixed wire stock.

how easy is it to take off the wire stock and replace it with a traditional wood stock?

will i need to replace the rear trunion and re-rivet?

You take out 2 screws, remove old one, replace with wood stock, replace screws....simple enough?

Wood is so boring, get some plastic on there.

Do the K-vars ever start melting, after say 500 rounds straight?  I know the wood stocks can occasionally start smoking and melt off, is it a problem with the polymer/plastic from K-VAR?

You'll need a couple of AK stock screws, the fixed Romy folder uses a different screw than a wood buttstock.

K-Var has a full length heat sheild in the fore arm the wood has what looks to be a metal nail that acts at the heat sheild. Both will heat up but the k-var seems to heat up slower than the wood. I have not experienced any melting.

In my experience you'll stop shooting before the melting happens ..I had this problem with my seak about a month ago.  Man was that bad boy hot...no melting, no damage, I think that was 120 rnds or 4 bumped mags in a row.

As stated above, it will most likely be too umcomfortable to shoot before it starts to melt.  I have had several extended range sessions with my SAR w/ kvar stocks, no disfiguring of any kind.
