What would you think about this as a first rifle?

$329

It's a SAR-1, GO FOR IT!  Check for canted sights and the other annoying features that some had, also trigger slap.  Mine had neither.

I would call first and make sure it is a SAR-1 not a WASR hi-cap conversion.

I agree. If it's a SAR-1, buy it!

Well I see a dimple above the magazine...I think is a SAR...go and get it before I beat you to it...

I wouldn't go buy the picture.  One of their guns has a dimple in the picture and clearly states that it is a wasr in the description.

Good one. The US parts count triggers from Century (who imports these) are cheap and vary from decent ot crap. But they are easy to either tune or replace ($30-80).

My name is RS39, and I endorse this message.

i emailed them a while back and they told me it was a wasr.

i had my hopes up too.

I'm sorry what is the difference?

What is maintenance like for an AK?

WASRs come in as single stack rifles.  They then mill out the mag well to accept double stack mags.  Depending on who did the conversion, you might get one that you need to tweek with a file.   Also, a WASR has no mag well dimple.

Still a good gun.

I have both, and in function, I can't tell the difference.  The WASR was a little better cosmetically when I bought it too.

So the  wasr's won't except   hicap/double stack mags?

are the mags more expensive?

WASRs come in both single stack and modified to hi-cap(ie double stack)

You need to know what you are buying.  Single stack can be had for under $200.

A single stack can be bought for $200, and modified yourself.  I keep looking for a sub-$200 variant at the gunshows but can never find them.  If you are simply looking for a decent AK, the WASR would do well, as would the SAR-1.

NONE!  Don't put rocks in the chamber and that is all, AK's never fail.  I've had 2 jams in 3 years and those were bad rounds.

There is matainance , like anyother rifle. Clean after you shoot.Or atleast wipe off to keep rust away. While it may shoot dam near forever with out haveing to clean,it still should be like anyother weapon system. I have had planty of stoppages with AK's, but they in general are very forgiveing and reliabilty is very high. Really what evey other rifle is graded against. Ya deffiently need one in the collection. WarDawg

Just a little wipe here and there, then some lubrication, can't forget lubrication.
Soundd good.

If I were to clean it like any other rifle, what is involved?

Thanks

Oh, just clean it every thousand rounds or so.
The AK can take it. I don't know how long it can go unclean before accuracy is effected, but that would probably be what would determine # of cleanings for me.

Good choice!
First one with my name on the #4473 was an AK (74, stripped receiver!)
