Well I finaly got around to getting an SKS.  (Not my first firearm by a long shot, but it is my first SKS).  I picked it up this weekend from a private seller who was in need of a little $$$.  So I thought I would stop over and say hello.

I did a little research with the help of this site, and found out I have a Chinese T-56, made in 1957, at factory 306.  A previous owner replaced the stock with an ATI Fiberforce Druganov stock (which I plan to replace).  Also the cleaning rod and bayonete are missing.   All the remaining parts have matching numbers.   It also came with four 30 round mags (two look new in plastic wrappers).

The rifle itself looked like it was stored in a dirty basement or barn, REALY dirty.  I took about two hours yesterday learning how to take it apart, cleaning it, and putting it back together.  Now it is clean, and I found it to be in very nice shape with no rust or damage.

I am going to look for an original style wood stock and cleaning rod.  I will probably pick up a bayonete too, just to add to the look when I am not shooting it.  If anyone wants the Fiberforce Druganov stock (it's in decent condition, maybe 85-90%) I would be willing to sell it.

Only questions are:
- Where can I find a wood stock?  Bought one from AIM, thanks.
- I know that ammo is cheap, but were can I get it?  Will a local gunshop carry it?  Or do I need to order some in bulk?

I can't wait to shoot it!

Cheaper than dirt and Sportsmansguide have plenty of 7.62x39.  The latter has 1120 round yugoslavian on stripper clips for like 139 or so, cant beat it.

I shot mine today for the first time(wife got it for me for christmas) and I love it.  Got a birthday in 2 months, it may need a friend.

Hey MyWar, I'd be interested in your Fiberforce stock. In fact, I have a original Chinese wood stock  ( 80to85% ) I'd trade you, that we could pay shipping each way. E-mail me, if  you are interested. I live in Indiana.

Well I bought the stock from AIM, and it came late last week.  I must say it is ROUGH.  Maybe it is because my dad and I build fine furniture (beds, chairs, dressers etc, not rifle furniture), but the wood is pretty chiped up, and the finish apears to be sprayed on then left to dry while layingon the ground or something.  Lots of drips and pools.  I am going to start stripping the finish today.

The wood is good though, no cracks or bad blemishes., other than some chips that I can hopefully sand out, if not I can fill them.  The stock is about 3/4" too long in front below the barrel thus not allowing my barrel assembly to fit, I guess I will have to shorten it and carve out the attachement tab again.  Also the square notched part were the rear of the reciever will be bedded is about one inch too long to the rear.  So it will need to be carved off as well to match the top of the grip.  Overall a lot more work than I expected.  But hey it's winter and I only spent $10, so I guess it will give me something to do.

Mechaniac -  I looked at the ATI druganov stock again this morning.  It is actualy in good shape, it has some swirls in the the composit from manufacturing which I thought was handling marks/scuffs.  As it is, it appears it is in great condition and not really abused at all.  I would upgrade my rating of it to 92% - 95% as it is obviously still used.  I am not interested in another wood stock at this time, but I will IM you about a possible sale.

Also you're going to find that the wood stock makes the rifle much, much lighter.  Those ATI Fiberforce Druganov stocks are damned heavy.
