| Here`s the hypothetical question. Yugo SKS, grenade launcher and lug intact, no bayonet. Tapco T-6 stock, handguard. I know removable mags are a big no no. BUT what about ones that are US made and fixed in a factory manner? For many years it was easy to find 20rd. and 30rd. mags with a welded tab that prevented them from being removed without removing the whole trigger group. I had a 30 like that for a Russian SKS I had years ago. It worked perfectly after a little TLC and required no mods to the gun at all. It was too long and somewhat awkward though. I`ve handled a few SKSs with the T-6 stock and I like it. I`d like to use a 20rd. fixed mag and stripper clips if I can do it without damning myself for all eternity or some such. Frankly it sickens me that we have to play these rediculous games in "the land of the Free" but here we are.... hinking.gif Please no comments about keep it original, save it`s collector value etc. let`s keep it to legal discussion only. Thanks, MadMarcus |

problem with the SKS is it has a lot more parts on the ATF list than an AK, and on the 59/66 the grenade launcher adds one more. Since SKS's with folding stocks or detachable mags are banned from importation, compliance with 922r is necessary to do either of those things. Yes it can be done on a Yugo, but you need more than the 6 compliance parts an AK generally does. The rule is "no more than 10" imported parts, not, as some people mistakenly think "at least 6 or 7 US parts." There is a whole legal section on this and an interactive matrix over at sksboards.com where you can actually plug in what you want to do and what parts you want to swap out and it will tell you. You're probably going to find out you were wise not to go the detachable mag route, as in addition to the T6 stock you'll need a US gas piston, operating rod, and a US mag, and also have to either swap out some trigger parts for US made ones, or remove the grenade launcher in favor of a US muzzle brake. However I think as long as the mag is fixed like you're talking about then 922r doesn't kick in just because its a larger capacity. And in my humble, free, non-legal personal opinion it's okay to do without compliance parts. As I understand it, ATF's definition of "fixed" on an SKS is one you at least have to remove the trigger group to get out. You may want to look for the 20 round Chinese fixed mags that pop up on gunbroker every now and then and avoid some headaches. Just my 2 cents. |

Way to Bubba, and Tapco-Fuck a historic rifle, if all you want is a fun gun I suggest you pick up some commercial garbage or better yet an AK you'll have alot more fun with that, you can have all the REMOVEABLE magazines you want, and by the time you add in all the complience parts you would need for an SKS it would be cheaper to, but I guess it's more fun to you to just destroy history.... And incidently what your planning would be illegal anyway irregardless if the magazine is fixed or not, 922r uses the 1989 "sporting purposes" test, if it has even ONE politicly incorrect feature than it's non importable, the Yugo 59/66 has several, a grenade launcher, night sights, and a bayonet lug (with bayonet no less....), and add to that your planning on putting on a collapsable stock, and a pistol grip correct?, 2 more no-nos, the only reason that the Yugo 59/66 is importable is because it's a C&R, and C&R's are exempt from 922r, if it looses it's C&R status which it will the second you Bubba it, it becomes illegal, and your an instant Felon.... The only way around it is to add a CRAPLOAD of US complience parts, or loose ALL the politicly incorrect features.... (incidently the 1989 list of politicly incorrect parts is different from the 1994 list hence the reason I listed night sights....) |
You should look into the history of Yugoslavia a bit. Some of these rifles saw serious use. Then again, maybe you shouldn't look into it. Some of what these rifles may have gotten up to gives me the willies. |

I know they may have seen quite a bit and I'm not trying to demean those who value them for that. I have one unissued and another heavily carved 59/66 that I'd never touch, but in my opinion some of these old shooter grade ones are so plentiful and so worn out that they are prime fodder for project guns for people who want them for that. I just saw on gunbroker this week some guy was selling 5 barrelled 59/66 receivers for 50 bucks for the lot. In any case, the guy asked a question politely and I just felt he deserved a polite response. Like you I also wonder about what stories some of these guns might have behind them, and yes it definitely can give you the willys. Just like when you read about the Armenian genocide committed by Turkey in the 1910's and you think about that old Turk Model 1893 Contract Rifle in the safe. I sold my Turk Mausers. |
It seems to be a traditional response from most people. Its the same on pirate 4x4. You get those guys who have seen so much and heard so much and posted so much (on the internet mind you ![]() The guys over at perfect union are a bit more polite and helfpul. One of the main reasons for not using AR15.com is for answers like that posted above. I have the same deal. Only its a Norinco. Only thing is I didnt get the bolt group or trigger with the reciever. Who knows what happened to it. It was in a storage shed being used for parts.... or to scientifically test the preservative properties of cosmoline on a wooden stock and metal reciever through a decade of Nevada weather changes. Held up well! I plan to T-6 fornicate it as well as drill the reciever for a scope mount. Why? Becuase not one damn serial number will match! I have to buy a new bolt group, trig mech, and gas system. So I might as well use US parts make it compliant and do what I want. If anyone so feels the urge to save the poor lil Norinco from a healthy dose of bubbatapcofornicatin then I will happily trade it for another complete SKS that you feel is worthy enough to be amatuer 'smithed on. |

I really don't think the ATF gives much a rip about bubba'd SKS till you do something stupid like get caught with a meth lab or go on a shooting spree. Then the Feds add up all your violations and put you away for a long time. We need to press for an "any stock on any gun" law. The stock doesn't change anything but looks or ergonomics anyway. As far as concealability, a folder rifle is still real easy to see and anyone with a hacksaw can make a rifle more concealable. I just don't see the "EVIL" in wanting a pistol gripped rifle?
