So for awhile now I've been looking at getting my SGL-21 SBR'd and turned into a 104 clone. The problem is I can't find a Russian front sight/gas block combo. I have however got a lead on a Bulgarian combo. But my understanding is that they have different internal diameters at the gas port location. I was wondering if I could get around this issue by swapping out the Russian gas tube for a Bulgarian tube or even using an Ultimak gas tube? Can anyone verify?

It's the position of the gas port in the barrel that is the problem, it's different on the Russian and Bulgarian models as I understand it. Even on my SGL31 to AK105 conversion the Russian FSB/GB did not line up with the SGL port in the barrel and Mario had to do some work to get them lined up. I'd need to double check on exactly what but he did say that the Russian FSB/GB was a bit further backward than the standard SLG/AK74M GB. I think the gas chamber on the 105 FSB/GB is shorter and that's what makes it sit further back to allow a proper fit with a standard AK gas tube.

Nictra has done research on the Bulgarian FSB/GB combos and may have better comments. He and I talked alot before I decided to go with the SGL/ALK105 route

Also, if it were me I'd wait it out and go Russian. It's going to hurt resale value to mix n match parts and if you're going to invest in a 104 it should probably be done right from the getgo. My .02 anyway.

gas port hole is in a different location on the Russian ones an Zen said. They also have a smaller diameter than the Bulgarians do.

The Bulgarian one are supposed to be direct replacements, but I have found that they tend to be pretty tight when pressed on. Much tighter than the gas block that you will be replacing.

The gas tube will not need to be changed out or anything if you go with either, just the barrel prep is different between Russian and Bulgarian. I'd say that if you found a Bulgarian and are die hard on a 104, jump on it. The Russian ones while once plentiful are all dried up or command a premium. However, if you really want something special, I'd hold out for a Russian one and have a smith turn down the barrel and cut a new gas port (some have extended the gas port via a channel, I prefer a new one drilled).

Either way you go, it will be a pretty slick rig, post pics when you get it done up!

As already stated the Bulgarian combo is a direct replacement as far as gas port location goes.  The Russian combos are a bit shorter and require the gas port to be drilled a little further back then the standard location.

Wait... Now I'm confused. I have a Russian SGL. If I were to use a Bulgarian combo, it would or would not be a direct replacement in terms of the gas port hole???

it would be a direct replacement, whether it's an SLR or an SGL.

Edit to clarify:

as long as your rifle has the 90 degree gas block that is....

I have been looking for a Russian 105 GB/SB and booster for my SGL31-94 for a long time. Still looking.
