I'm trying to remove the front sight base on my parts kit so I can shorten the barrel for a pistol build, but it wont budge. I removed both of the pins, one came out easily, the other took about two hours. After that I tried canting it to loosen it, and it wouldn't move. So then I tried hammering it towards the muzzle, and it still wont move. I've soaked it in breakfree to try to get it looser, and I've tried heating it, neither worked. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks to removing the FSB. I'm getting a 20 ton press tommorow, so I may try using that. |
That or that and heat should do it. The trick is blocking up the fsb and pressing the barrel from the muzzle straight down. See this thread. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=80&t=97286 edited to add link. |
Well, I got my press and once I figured out a way to get the fsb stable under the ram it came off easily. I got a crescent wrench and put it loosely around the barrel under the fsb, and then stacked a few nickles on top of the muzzle. After it popped free I pressed it until it was even with the front of the fsb, then raised the ram and put a 10mm socket on it (the 10mm socket was my wife's idea ) and that worked great for pressing it out the rest of the way.

Well, here's an update for anyone who cares, I got the barrel cut down and recrowned. Then I took some emry cloth and slowly got the barrel down to size for the fsb to go back on, filed the fsb pin notchs in it, and pressed it back on. All in all I'm very happy with how it went and I'm excited about getting it back togther. I'd like to thank everyone on the board who's given me build advice. |
