I've been toying with the idea of semi-cloning a Galil on say a SAR-1, but I'm looking for other points of view on the best way to do it, if it can be done. First, I'm looking for something fairly visually and functionally similar to the Galil, at a much lower cost. More of applying Galil ideas to a stamped reciever AKM. Ace makes a folder that would work and only requires cutting off the tang on the rear trunnion. Cost there is $164.90. Tapco makes a "Galil" handguard for $39.95. Galil style pistol grip, no problem. The sights are where it gets tricky. K-Var has this Romanian gas block/front sight that looks like it would work.  www.k-var.com/product.asp?0=216&1=235&3=677 Does anyone know if this will work with the standard gas tube & piston? The rear sight bugs me. I hate giving up a large amount of sight radius, so removing the rear sight and getting an AR-15 style on the dust cover seems to be the best option. Does anyone other than Krebs make a dustcover rear sight? Anyway, ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. |

I'd stay away from the Tapco handguard (my preference). I sent one back. Looks cool in the picture, but once I had it, the actual "grip" area is very short and the bulge on the back of the grip kind of jams against your hand. It was also seemed very cheap and toyish in general and was excessively wide. I did kind of like the SAW pistol grip. It too is a little on the fat side and the plastic doesn't seem quite quality, but overall I liked the feel. I also stripped off the pos trap door they put on the bottom of it. I used to own a Galil ARM (.308) and love it. If you go with the ACE folder let me know how it works out, I'm looking at the same set up, or possibly if someone can anser my post, retrofitting a Galil folder (The Galil folder was top notch, and I think I can probably find one for around the same price as the ACE).
