Do all AKs share the same gas piston?  Or is the size different between 7.62, 5.45, and 5.56?

7.62 is all same diameter, three different lengths.  There's the Standard, the Krinkov, and a mid-length which is about 1" shorter than the standard.  The mid-length is used by the AMD-65 and SA-85M... Basically Hungarian only unless I'm wrong... which is highly likely if you ask my wife or kids.

Some Hungarians were imported with a standard/long piston.  They must have wanted to use their supply of short pistons up since they no longer made the AMD65 when the 85 was imported.  Anyone have any dates when the 65 production stopped?

So then if I'm doing an AK74 build I can safely replace the gas piston with a US made ak47 piston right?

That's what I did, and it worked fine.
