Hi, how do I remove the gas piston off of my Romanian SAR1?  Thanks for any assistance!

1) Locate the cross pin in the carrier. You should see the outline or an indent about 1/2" for the rear of the piston.

2) Punch the center of the pin.

3) Drill the pin out with a 3 mm. or 1/8" Cobalt drill. A drill press in extremley helpful. Use plenty of oil, a low speed setting and just enough pressure to get some chips. If you can't get all the way through, try knocking it out with a punch and hammer.

4) Unscrew the piston. You may need a vise or pair of pliers to get it past where the old pin was.

To replace:

1) Screw in the new piston, leaving a slight gap, 1/16" or less between the piston shoulder and the front of the carrier.

2) Drill through the piston with the 1/8" drill.

3) Slightly chamfer the hole on both sides of the carrier.

4) Remove the new piston.

5) Drill the 1/8" hole, in the piston only, out the 3/16".

6) Screw back in, lining up the holes by eye. Be sure you gap is still there.

7) Get a peice of 1/8" steel rod and cut about 1/2" longer than the diameter of the carrier.

8) Put it through the hole in the carreir and piston.

9) Lay one side of the pin on a solid base and beat the other side of the pin with a hammer until the chamfer is filled.

10) Grind/file any extra material that pokes out from the carrier to match the original contours.

11) Refinish to your liking.

There should be a slight wobble in the piston where it screws into the carrier. If there isn't, try banging lightly on a wood bench top. If it doesn't loosen up, try again. Hope this helps,

Mike

On a lot of SAR's the piston was welded on by the Century monkeys.

Yeup, chances are your piston's welded to the carrier.

Isn't  a SAR gas piston a U.S. compliance part?

does it make much of a difference if the piston is tight?? On my romy build I screwed it in all the way, but I left a gap on my upcoming SA-85 build but it still doesnt wobble

As long as it doesn't hang up going into the gas block you should be okay. If it does hang, hold by the carrier and tap the piston on a work bench different ways until slides in without hanging.

Just reading along...  Appreciate the information.  I got my first kit the other day and was worried about the piston not being screwed flush and then the wobble in the rod.   THEN I noticed the pin was keeping the rod from turning... I thought I received a crappy kit.

I feel MUCH better now... whewwwwwwwww!
