Hey Guys,
I have come across a Pre-Ban AK and no where on it does it have who made it.
on the side it says AK47s 7.62x39mm Made in China
serial #87044xx

Found in a pawn shop and it has a threaded barrel with slant brake., bayo lug with bayonet. the bayonet has matching serial number to rifle. all wood furniture even hand grip. first thoughts would be a Norinco... Any thoughts on what it could be and what it would be worth?????????

p.s. Also it has on it that it was Imported by Armco, Boylston, MA.

Thanks for any help..
Pappy

it's a pre-'89 ban, pre-norinco marked chicom.

yesterday morning it was worth $750-800 in excellent condition.

today...it's worth about $500.

Campy, correct me if I am wrong, but what has the AWB sunsetting have to do with Chinese imports?

I think they are still banned under a prior law that is has no sunset provision.

Weapons manufactured outside the U.S. and imported prior to 1989 can have all the evil features, and no more will be imported....period.  This makes the Chinese AK a collectible and worth money.

Weapons manufactured inside the U.S. after 2004 cannot have evil features until after the AWB sunsets on the 14th of September, 2004.

So.....why spend $1000 on an AK with evil features when you can have one in about six months for only $300-$400 ???

Bottomline:  All those prebans will/have gone down in value with the pending AWB sunset.

Make sense?

This is true, But the ones built after the AWB sets in Sept. and after the 89 Import, still will need 5 US parts to be legal..????

My Chinese underfolder is also an Armco Import.  These are nice & fairly well finished.  The value is market driven, and the market will expand in the fall dropping prices.  Even though it's a nice rifle, it's really got nothing over what will be available for cheaper in 6 months.  An underfolder may be a different story, as that's not something an amateur can slap on, but even they will lose some part of their value.

AKs are way to easy to make for US builders not to build'em.  We are not talking exotics here... (ex: SIG 550, AR70, AUG...)  Supposedly DSA will take a shot at an AUG, but I'll wait for quality reports before I'll bite.

Well I saw it and bought it for a shooter...Only have to give 395.00 for it so hopefully I did not get beat up too bad over it.

you did good, pappy! congrats!!

seriously guys...does having a crappy commie trigger (as opposed to a nice k-var, rsa or gordon) make and identical rifle worth twice the price?

not to me. ymmv.

if the ban sunsets (as it should!!) there will be all kinds of people tooling up to join the market.

folks like oow, arsenal inc, arsenal usa and orf will be well positioned and have a headstart to get cracking on higher quality ak's...now that the market will most likely permit the construction of 'assault rifles'.

i don't think the bayo and flash 'hider' features will drive the market nearly as much as folders and telestocks.

if'n i was you, i would be stocking up on folding stocks..for a sunny day!

As far as importers go that one is fairly rare.  Very little is written, or even known about them. You most definately stole it!

But I live in NY Campy... Im doomed to have to buy pre-bans only.. So the prices dropping on those is a good thing since NY has a perminant ban on new assault weapons made after 89..

NY Stae of Communists...

Life sucks...
