I'd like to have a picatinny railed forend, but with the diferent options, I dunno which one to go with. I'd like to be able to mount a light, but more importantly, an Aimpoint or other sighting device. 1. Krebs Custom AK Quad Rail Forend. I've very much heard of Mark Krebs. He's got a good stellar reputation for making badass custom AKs, and great parts for AK DIYs. From what I see in the picture it looks like a quality part. The description says it is a 2 piece design that allows for removal of the top rail, if I so choose. Price is $234.95 from DSA inc. 2. Ultimak ACR2 3-Rail Forend System. So far, their reputation has been quite good, from what I've read. Its, as its item title says, a 3-railed system. Not sure if its a 2 piece or 1 piece, not that it really matters. It looks like its a sturdy unit, that has a lil extra length to it, which would be good, what with the big ass light I'm gonna put on it. With this unit, I would be able to mount a light, but not an optical device. I would have to buy an Ultimak Scount Mount to be able to use a sighting device. Price $220 even, but I would also have to buy a scout mount, and thats another $95.00, for a total $315.00 3. TD Industries mount. This one I dont know jack shit about. Any info on it, like durability, bulk, etc. would be appreciated. I think its a 4-rail system, almost like the Krebs unit. Beyond that, I know nuthin else. Price is around $90-$100. 4. First Samco/Fobus rail system. I dont know a damned thing about this unit. In fact I cant remember when I last saw one. Price, I think, was around $60, but I dunno. Do tell. 5. Anything else I've failed to mention, let me know. |

www.dsarms.com/item-detail.cfm?ID=BT21428&storeid=1&image=btak47hg.gif Brugger & Thomet part $295 rounds out your list that I know of The TDI just has islands of rail on the lower, not a full run to mount wherever. I have the upper only, and the part is fine. My issue is the gas tube I bought for my AMD63 is not snug up front, so I need to stabilize it there (vise clamp, dremel bead of jbweld, other). TDI has very sturdy polymer but no heat sheilds or vents, so you will really prefer a front pistol grip. Budget combo: BP02 low profile weaver bracket adaptor for side rail $50, EOTech on top, TDI upper railed handguard $40, Surefire light on top. The light will not care if it moves 1mm, and ''may well'' fit under the sight line of the red dot if the optic is not a super low tube profile. All In: If B&T keeps the HK snobs happy... |

I went the cheap route and bought an Ultimak gas tube $100, bought a US lower hand guard and put a 6"rail on it $27.85 totalform a local gunshop. Tap the Polymer just like steel and heat the screws so they will "lock" into the poly. Had to grind a little material off of the HG to get it to sit flat, but it was easy and works pretty good. My sons can't hold the rifle to shot it (twin 9 yr olds) and I had a rail mount bi pod already so...........or aimsurplus.com/acatalog/AK_Accesories_&Parts.html Fob-AKSet Synthetic AK Handguard Set with Mounting Rails Item#Fob-AKSet High Quality First Samco AK Handguard Set with Accessory Mounting Rails. Well, after looking at the different forends, The TDI/Fobus mount is out of the running. I dont like those short picatinny rails, as they dont seem to give much room to position things. I guess the front runners are the Bugger & Thommet, Krebs, and Ultimak...in no particular order, other than alphabetical. |

Have you seen this, this is what mine looks like. I saved $10 by doing it myself though www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=213655 |
| I have the ultimak on a saiga conversion and it is very solid I would say on par for quality with the RAS's I have used for work on my AR's. It does add quite a bit of weight to the front of the weapon so that is one down fall to be considered. It is US made so it does help with parts count unlike the B&T or the TDI or Fobus so that is a plus. I would deffinately buy it again. |
