Here is the deal, I have a passing interest in AKs.
My holy grail for AKs is a Valmet M76 in 5.56NATO.
Of course, I do not have the money for that right now.
So, I am down to the other two AKs I am interested in - A plum AK74 and an AKM.
Here is the question - am I more likely to be able to find a quality AKM at a cheaper price than a quality plum AK74?

The 7.62 AKMs I am considering are...
Vector AK
WASR
ORF AK
SAR 1

Any opinions?

Awww!  Brah!  I just saw a Vector AK with Plum furniture at a gun show for $450.  It should be at the one I'm going to this weekend.  Wire me the money and I'll pick it for you.

I don't own a Vector or a ORF, so my input isn't rock solid.  The reputation of Vector seems to be the best out of the choices you listed, with ORF close behind.

WASR can be total crap, like the one I got - it's a big gamble, and I wouldn't advise it.

If at all possible, stay away from the Century builds as some are great and some are junk.... unless you like rolling the dice, and hoping for the best.

Arsenal 7.62 is my favorite of my AKs.

Not cheap like a Century WASR, but you can feel the difference in the quality.  Well Built!

If you want a 5.56 AK, there are still a few Arsenal 106's floating about.

I figured you came in here to recommend a Saiga!

The Vectors are very nice guns.  Mine has good fit and finish, nice trigger, accurate and reliable.  They carry a 5 yr warranty.  I had friend build me 2 Romy G kits (one Romanian side folder and a fixed stock gun) that are very, very nice.  They both came out better than the Vector or any of my other factory AKs.  If you don't want to mess with having one built get a Vector.  If you know a good builder you can make the AK the way you want and get a very nice gun for less money but no 5 year guarantee.  Good luck with your first AK, welcome to the Dark Side.

I really, really like my Vector.  Really solid and well put together. I would get a Vector, then once the bug bites hard, get a WASR for beating around.  My Vector AK is my favorite rifle, even at 1/2 the cost of some others.

If you are going to buy an AK that is already built, get yourself a Vector from Atlantic Firearms. Blaine give AR15.com Members a discount on any rifle you will purchase from him at Atlantic Firearms

Ohio Rapid Fire has some good deals on 5.45 AK's

If you are going to build one, get yourself a good matching numbers kit and a DCI/NoDak Spud Receiver

This is what I did for my first.  Great rifle and a great dealer.
This will become more than a "passing interest."  You know how these things pan out.

Just so you know they don't have a shop any where just an online FFL dealer. Here the page that says it.

How about a 74 and stocking a few of the crates of surp steel core 5.45 at .11/rnd?

Otherwise the 47s built on Polish kits are nice.

It's a PK-23 mounted on a modified BP-02 mount. Details in this thread: http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=56&t=99362
