| Hello everyone. i was hoping some of the more knowledgable here could help me out on this one. I am getting eady to purchase a new in box polytech from a local dealer that is getting it straight from the distributor. It as an AKS 762 and its import date is 1990. I know it is post ban (after 1989) and that is fine with me to have no folding stock or flash hider, but the gun has a pistol grip and regular butt stock, not a thumbhole stock. Is this legal? It came in before the importation laws that say rifles have to have so many US made parts. Is this correct? If not, then the distributor is selling illegal rifles. If it is legal because it came in before importation was stopped, I should be able to permanently attach any foreign or US muzzle break legally, right? Please help me out here!! |

What is the asking price? A preban polytech with pistol grip and fixed buttstock would be going for $800 and up - depending on condition. Here is an example - gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=7930364 ( lord knows what a NIB is worth ) Is this a "real" large scale gun distributor? I seriously doubt a distributor would be selling an illegaly modified gun, it just ain't worth going to jail for a couple hundred bucks! |
| It is not a preban and is most definitely coming from a distributor. The price is actually about 500.00 NIB. Maybe that is a bit much, but after checking out the other one the dealer has, I want it, and they are getting hard to find new. Will I be able to add a US muzzle break? It looks like the muzzle is threaded with a muzzle nut tac welded over it, so it should be legal to add a US break and weld it, right? |

Polytechs are very high quality. There was a large batch that came into the country that didn't get released because of the 89 ban. In the last couple of years they appeared sporting ground off bayonet mounts and thumbhole stocks. If somebody has added USA firecontrol parts, a gas piston and a USA pistol grip (the most common mods) the Poly becomes a USA made rifle and a so called 922r rifle. Perfectly legal. I wouldn't worry about it. Who is the Distributor. CDNN? Mike |

Yeah, i thought it all looked very high quality. I think it may be one of the ones held up in storage by the 89 ban. I hope they used US parts, because they are pistol grip. If not then all I would need is 5 US parts to make it US? I am going to ask my dealer who the distributor is and I'll let you know. Any other comments you have, I would love to hear them. Thanks Mike J |
