I have recently discovered I need a red dot on my ak but it lacks a side mount which is my preferred method for mounting so I am going with a TWS topcover or ultimak gas tube.
I cannot decide which one so I'd like some help please..which did you choose and why? Any cons? |

I use the TWS because in conjunction with the TWS peep sight, it gives me a longer sight radius, but also allows for mounting any optic you desire, as well as having rail-estate left for additional magnifiers and whatnot.
Plus, if you're used to the location of optics when using a side mount, you may prefer the TWS topcover. TWS topcover and peep sight will also allow for co-witness if you use a low mount RDS like the Vortex SPARC. Primary concern with gas tube mounted optics is heat. |

Big fan of the Ultimak, but if you are using anything other than a MRD it will likely put too much weight at the front of the rifle. With a MRD the balance of the rifle is unaffected.
Of the 2 AKs I run Ultimaks on one has an Aimpoint H-1 and the other has a Bushnell TRS-25, both have no issues with the heat. Another benefit of the Ultimak is being able to mount a light on it. TWS has a lot of positive feedback, but the newer ones are sized different and generally will leave gaps which just looks sloppy imo. There was some pictures of this posted on this forum, but I can't remember what thread it was. ETA: Both are good and have their pros and cons. One thing to consider would be using both at the same time for ultimate rail estate. |

I use the Ultimak on 2 of my rifles with a TRS-25 also and the combo is great. I keep a wood or poly lower handguard on it. The tube will get hot though under sustained fire. |

I wear PIG FDTs. |

I picked the TWS because I wanted to retain a full handguard, and the rear peep sight gave me a much longer sight radius on my Draco sbr. I have a newer production model, and it is cut to fit Yugos as well, so it leave a few unsightly gaps. Do I wish they weren't there? Sure. Does it affect function? No, and my rifles not a beauty queen anyway, but it still kinda bugs me. I use the TRS-25 as well, and it seems to be a good combo. Really you can't go wrong either way.
