Hi Guys,

After a lot of thought, I have decided to purchase a AK instead of some of the other semi-autos out there--so it will be a AK for sure.
Problem is, I don't know very much about them and need some advice.

Here is what I'm thinking and I hope you'll add to or correct what my choices are.

I see AKs are available in .308 at that is the caliber I am interested in unless you all advise otherwise.
I do not like folding stocks and prefer a solid conventional buttstock preferably in synthetic but wood could be OK.
Because of my eyesight at times ( diabetic)  I would like to mount a low power scope---sometimes I have a hard time with iron sights.
I know AKs are not famous for their accuracy but would like to get as accurate a rifle as I can.
Solid construction and reliability are very important---reliability is one of the main reasons I am going with the AK.

I have about $1000.00 set aside for the rifle and would really appreciate your opinions and suggestions on which manufacturer to go with and anything else I should consider.
Thanks for the help!!

personally, if it had to be 308, I would say FAL. They are just as reliable in as 308 AKs and have better parts availability. $800-$1100 will get a nice 21" FAL

If you want an AK variant, seems like a PSL/FPK would be good for you:

and 7.62x54r is ALOT cheaper than .308 now

Yep,get something in the SVD (Draginov) family. They usually come with a scope and they used to be the prefered weapon of snipers in the Bloc countries.Insurgents in Iraq are using them right now against us.

54r has been cheap for a while but no guarantees (stack deep). The rim also keeps mags to 10rnds. Milsurp is also corrosive.

For 308, see the Russian section for Saiga conversions.

For only 200yds, 762x39 is good too.

Now those Mosin Nagant bolt guns sure are easy to clean after shooting corrosive surp 54r

Just to clarify, the PSL/FPK Dragunov isn't in the SVD family. It's an AK firing 7.62x54r and has no relation to an actual Dragunov other than using the same ammo and filling a similar role. Great rifle for what it is, but it's not a Dragnov even though marketing hype even got it stenciled on the receiver. The two rifles are completely different in design even though they have similar performance.

Is the OP looking for a 308 battle rifle or just a 16" barrel type AK in 308? I think we may be drifting off subject

Down side to a long distance AK is that it has to be zeroed at those distances.

Ever consider a PTR or another HK-91 clone?

IMHO a scoped HK91 is uncomfortable to shoot

get a saiga 308 and a scope for it. you should be able to convert it yourself and have a few bucks left over for some ammo.
