I purchased a SAR2 from a buddy of mine about a year ago. The barrel has been threaded, and I just cannot determine what the thread pitch is. A 14/1 LH slant brake almost fits, but it is just a hair too big. It's almost like they took off a little too much during the threading process.
Do you guys know if I would be able to re-thread the barrel using 1/28 RH, the AR size thread? I'm just not too sure about doing it once the barrel has already been threaded. |

I believe the sar-2 muzzles were too narrow to be threaded 14x1. Have you tried a 1/2 x 28 muzzle device to see if it fits on? Another option could be to replace the front sight block with a Romanian 22mm threaded front sight block and use a 22mm comp. this is really the way to go |

That's it. I don't know how hard it would be to change out though. |

If it was a home threading job, the pitch could be anything. I know you probably don't want to walk the gun into a hardware store, but check out your hometown forum and see if anyone has those tools that measure the thread pitch, or you could just go buy several nuts from a hardware store that look like the right size and try them until you find the right one.
I home threaded my WASR-3 and it's not any of the standard threads, after threading it, I used the tap to cut an old A1 FH to the same threads and put it on. |

If so did they line up with the slots already drilled in your barrel? Did you need a drill press when you drilled through the fsb and barrel? Did you reuse the original pins to pin the new fsb on? I'm interested in doing this to my sar2 also. |

K-Var... Harry Reid... eh.... CNC Warrior has the actual 22mm Romanian spec 74 brake for a good price though. http://www.cncwarrior.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=135 |

The FSB is NOT drilled, just like most AR front sight bases, a drill press is mandatory for this I feel, fwiw the FSB is one hard SOB, I went through 3 HSS bits, the bbl is soft comparatively you can typically reuse the pins or order some new ones or just use some round stock of your choosing, 2mm is the dia of the orig IIRC, the hardest part of the whole process is getting the old one off usually then getting it clamped down in a jig for the drill press...or you couls send it out and have all this done...if thats the route you take I would give Chris Butler a call, he did a mod on my RPK and I have to say he is first rate, we talked about the process of how to do the mod for a couple weeks before we came to a conclusion...he agreed the actual job was a PITA and I knew it was out of my realm of gun plumbing |

I tried a standard AR flash hider, and it is too small, and the threads are in the opposite direction. I tried the 14/1 AK FH, and it is just slightly too large. I looked really close, and it looks like there was just not enough barrel material to get good deep threads with the 14/1 threader. After reading the posts above, and looking at the prices and how much work it is to change out the FSB, I really just want to try to re-thread this to the 1/28 RH threads. Has anyone had experience re-threading a barrel? Did it work? Think there is enough barrel material left? Seems to me, if it fails, i could always go the new 22mm FSB route then. I spotted those 22mm FH's at CNC. They look like the ticket if I have to go the new FSB route. They have some cool stuff on that site. Thanks for the replies so far. |

So it's a nonstandard left hand thread? Sounds like you may have to do like CA_TX-Cop suggests. Or maybe a previous owner tried to thread it 14mmx1 and didn't have enough barrel diameter to do it properly. If that was the case the threads would be awful shallow though right? I wanted to put a 22mm Romanian fsb on my sar2 but it sounds like I'd have to send it out to get it installed since I don't have a drill press. I was hoping it was just a simple swap out. Not sure if your barrel can be re-threaded but if you do it be sure to use a thread alignment tool if you can. If a standard threaded AR flash hider doesn't slide over your muzzle now, maybe you will have enough barrel left to thread it 1/2x28. I'd get a good measurement on the barrel first though and then check to see what the min diameter is for 1/2x28 pitch. Good luck! |
