| can the ak handle? Or does it depend on which variant? I have a Romanian, and I've never shot more than 30 without letting it cool. I'm guessing it could handle 500 rounds continuous though. |
A member on here shot well over 900 rounds through a yugo and all it did was leech all the sap out of the wood and char it a little. But that was: In cool weather, in a moist enviornment, with 30 round mags, semi auto (might have bumped some, but I dont think he did). However, Ive read reports that in hotter, drier enviornments, with full auto and drums, gas tube covers have ignited under the right conditions (firing 75 shot burst, reloading FAST, repeating, several times). After 150 rounds at about 60 RPM my Rommy got hot, smoked, and the sap came out of the wood. I think if prices go back down, later if I have the $$$ Im going to get about 3 cases of ammo, a LULA and take one of my buddies to the range to take turns reloading mags and bumping. |

Somewhere between 500 and a thousand rounds of sustained fire with a typical military AK is about the limit. The downside is that without using some type of glove your hand is liable to get burnt before that. There have been many who managed to catch the handguards on fire. Of course the AK was never designed for that type of fire, that is the duty of a light machinegun, not an assault rifle. Firing Semi with thirty round mage would probably take quite wa while to reach that point. That is the reason most light manchine guns come with quick change barrels, during sustained fire you can swap barrels every thousand rounds or so, an prevent any major damage. |
I saw a video and I am sure someone will post it soon of some guy shooting an FA ak With about 9 drums laying on the ground around him...the handquards were aflame and he was still shooting, He then switched to the 30 rounders and during the first mag it started blowing the rounds before they even chambered, shooting fire out the ejection port...Needless to say, He stopped firing at that point saying that it was dangerous...

| Went shooting with the girlfriend last weekend and handed her the rifle a couple of times while I reloaded. She's got barrel blisters all over her left hand now. At 5'2", she's a tough little woman, but telling her NOT to place her fingers near the barrel didn't sink in for a while. 300 rounds in about 20 minutes. |
