I'm looking for a rifle with the AK gas system and general reliability, but uses AR mags, AR safety/mag release/bolt release/bolt hold open/caliber.  Good examples are the XCR, HK 416, and Daewoo DR 200.  The problem with these is they're not really out yet, made by H&K and uber expensive, or way too rare.  So, is there any alternative to get the best of both worlds?

Have you considerered getting a LW gas piston upper for your AR? Way cheaper than the HK416.

I can't comment on it, since I've never shot one, but the guys here that have them, seem to like them.

Absit,

You could go with a POF piston upper.  $975

Yeah but when you spend $900 for the piston and $1100 for the rifle it kinda defeats the purpose of not just buying another rifle.  For that money I could just swap out BCGs every time it fouled rather than cleaning it.  I was hoping for something more mainstream, too.  The L-W pistons don't really belong in ARs, and aren't worth the money IMO.  Am I just stuck waiting to see if the XCR will be good?

The Kel Tec rifle uses AR mags and most the people who I have talked to that actualy own it like them.

EDIT: AR 180B by armlite.

Thats your best bet. If they are as good as they say, once they hit the market you will wish you had just waited.

Or track down a FNC, or drop $400 in a WASR3 with 4 weiger mags to tide you over as a shootable savings acct until the ideal comes along.

The WASR3 isn't a hybrid, just a different caliber AK :P  anything I have to "track down" is probably too rare to be considered serviceable anyway.  Guess I'll just build a few more ARs until I can find the ultimate rifle.

Oh! I though you were looking for a nice plinker. If you are looking for the "ultimate rifle", the first thing you need to do is ditch the 5.56/.223 requirement.

AR 180B sounds interesting. Some think it ugly but it's not that bad. Stick an ACE folder on it and thread it for a FH, and you got a pretty evil animal. Hell keep it long enough, somwhere around 17" use a clamp on Bayo lug for the light bbl AR and you even get a bayo. By the way, DR 200's are awesome, except for spare parts, but they don't really break anyway. Same deal -- ACE folder and FH and lug. EVIL city. Both use AR mags too. Just keep 'em high quality like the AR and your looking at 100% reliability too.

The rifle that will fit your bill to a tee is the.......Daewoo DR-200

Like I said, it's too rare to be considered serviceable because spare parts are too hard to find.
