Being a " boomer" and retired from the military, I decided on three firearms that will be handed down to my Son's. I have a nice Colt 1911 and Colt AR15. My wife gave me the okay to get a AK 47. Remembering the days of $300 AK's, I see they are days gone by. Wish I had bought a Chinese Norinco, but we honestly put our nose up at them in favor of the AR. I refuse to pay over $1200 for some current AK's and truthfully been with the wife almost 50 years and would like to be with her until we depart. I'm looking at the Zastava Arms M70. It looks like it might be a quality firearm. I have a bunch of .308 but the M77 is just a little pricey. Doe's anyone have any recommendations for what to look for? My allowance is $1000 tops.
Thank you in advance. |

My WASR10 has been a flawless shooter. Cugir rivets them old school solid.

Given the cost of 7.62x39, you may want to look at alternatives in other calibers.
PSA builds decent AKs. |

I have a zastava in 556
Great gun unless you're a reloader chamber is a bit large and brass expands more then a decent US cut chamber. Look and see if you can find a MAK 90 decent gun easy to convert to PG/ stock and it is a norinco not milled but still a norinco. |

I've been happy with my PSA AK103.
Haven't put as many rounds down it as I would like but seems to be solidly built. |

OP, congrats on getting the AK, now that your wife said you could. I applaud you and I scold you.
I believe in full disclosure with my wife, but I'd have a real hard time if I was required to get permission from her to buy any gun. Maybe it's a question of economics? Or maybe the way you guys have organized your finances - I think every couple has a threshold for purchases from home/combined accounts. Who are we to judge...oh wait, this is ARFCOM, we judge regardless. Now that I've said my peace, please post pics when you get your AK, and welcome to the dark side. |

There is one at Atlantic within your budget.

You mentioned the Zastava M77; I’ve got one and I it’s a great rifle. I don’t think you’d go wrong spending the extra for one.

Under a 1000 and at the current time all things considered i'd get a WASR. It will outlast you by a looooong time and will run great for your kids too.
Wasr's are to AK's, what the Chevy 350 motor is to trucks, the decades long millions-produced workhorse that refuses to die. |

I’d say get the m77 or something in 556 if you have a budget and don’t already have a ton of x39.
My 101 from psa gets shot more than anything and it’s a blast. It’s basically my 74 we have at home. |

Vote for PSA-101. All the harshness and manual of arms of the AK but in a convenient capitalist caliber that all your rifles can eat
I would not be getting into 7.62x39 today.. I have an M77 and it's a great rifle but with the cost of .308 I wouldn't want it as my only AK |

7.62x39 is still cheaper than 5.56 by 50-100 bucks a case. And it's a far better round. And it's what the AK was meant to shoot, I see no reason to buy a .223 AK when I have AR's already that do a fine job of shooting varmints if i'm so inclined.
If you only buy one AK, it should damn sure be in x39. JMHO. |

They are a blast to shoot, recoil is mild but still a satisfying thump that lets you know you shot something badass, they are pure death for medium-sized game like deer. Nothing wrong with modernity, but you can also embrace tradition sometimes, and it's very worthwhile to do so IMO. Bonus: Banana clips are more curvy in 7.62. |

After looking what is currently available, and it being between a WTP Fox or a Zastava M70, I have decided on the M70. I have a Colt AR15A4 in 5.56so am fine with the 7.62. By the way, my wife is a shotgun lady. Her Remington 870 has filled our freezer more than once and she keeps it cleaned and ready to go in our bedroom. Between now and tomorrow, I just have to decide what furniture I like. She likes the Serbian red, I like the Walnut.

The Zastava's are different from "standard" AKs with their 1.5mm receivers, etc. and when looking for accessories, furniture included, you have to be sure it specifically states that it'll fit a Zastava... |

I have a Zastava M70 with the Serbian red wood on the way. I found a Serbian surplus sling and black pistol grip that I'll order when it gets here. The misses and I are looking forward to some range time for a fam fire.
