Hey there folks, so I am on the hunt for a lower-end AK.  None of the fun shops nearby have any WASR's on deck, my local big box store has a used IO STG 2000-C for $475.  I got them down to $425+tax, and they put it on hold for 5 days for me (I wanted to come and ask you all first).  So, from what I read, these are made on the same receiver as a WASR, but, as one individual stated, the STG's internals are all brand new "American made" parts whereas the WASRs' guts are all used/surplus.  I don't know that much about guns, let alone AK's...I'm learning, but not there yet.

The bore seemed to be in great condition, the receiver's paint was scratched off on places, mainly underneath.  To those folks who know more about this than I, do you all think this is a decent deal?  Anyone have any experience with these rifles?  I also read they only accept Thermold mags, then I read from someone else who says that is BS.  Last thing - suppossedly you can't change the handguards due to a difference in the gas block, but what about the other internal parts...are they cross compatible with, say, a WASR?  Any info and help would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you all!

Hey!  I bought a STG-2000C when they first came out.  Got an introductory deal via AIM for $350.  Then I watched as they went up to like $600 or $650, IIRC...during the Obama scare.  I think they're back down to the $400 range brand new now, though.

I love mine.  My first AK, and more accurate than I expected.  I'd read that AKs, especially ones with a short sight radius like the STG, weren't precision weapons.  While I'd agree to a point, I feel it's a great short/mid range weapon.

You're correct about the handguards, kind of a proprietary design.  I think someone said Saiga hanguards may fit with some working, but haven't verified this.  Ouside that, they're pretty much standard Romanian AK fare.

FWIW, I use 20-rd Hungarian "tanker" mags & 75-rd Korean drums with mine, with no problems.  I'm waiting for my TAPCO "SAW" pistol grip to arrive, and am considering one of the "skeleton"-style AK stocks I've seen around.  I love the HK/Galil look of the STG!
