A little over two years ago I had Troy at Inrange build me a AK-74 out of a Bulgarian parts kit. Purchased 500 rds of Wolf ammo and had a great time. Time went on and ammo was gone, 5.45 is an odd ball round. With the ARs running 223 and getting the HK flu, it (ak-74) sat in the back of my safe until today. Last month decided that it was time to get another 500rds and get some shooting time that is well deserved. Took her out today and the first shot was a pop can at 226 yards. Up into the sky it went. Dam lucky or am I good? I think its the former. Emptied the mag and made it dance a little. Then took the range finder out and saw a small bush at 405 yard. Set the sights and was a couple feet low. Upped it to 600 meters and dead on. Was hammering that little sage brush. Enjoyed myself and decide need to stock up on more ammo and give a big THANKS to Troy for doing a great job on a fun little rifle. |

So 300-600 yds,you have to know how to compensate for the cartridge? or is 600 yds the max for the 5.45mm? Sorry, just trying to get a better understanding of what you meant. ETA: I'm limited to 100 yds, so the performance of 5.45mm past that distance is something im interested in. |
| I dont know what the energy of the round is at 400 yards but around there it starts to fall like a rock. It will shoot past 600 yards but can you hit anything and does the rd have alot of energy? IMHO with iron sight.... not that much. But is it a fun little round? Yes. Do I like it better then 223? Yes. Will it punch through as much as 223? no. But it is deadly vs. coyotes. I think only a light 40gr varmint tip in 223 is better. |
