| Does anyone have any expierences installing a side mounting plate on a milled SLR? I am thinking about giving it a go but I would like to know the good, bad and the ugly about doing it. Is there an advantage to the 3 rivet mount vs the 2 screw mount? Is the Bulgy mount better designed than the Russian? Thanks, Ed |

i've installed several of the 2-screw russian plates (ordered from tantal). getting either the screwed or riveted plate level with the bbl. axis is the most critical part of the job. even then, russian optics have a large range of elevation adjustment to compensate for error. using a granite plate (or steel layout table) with a dial indicator to sweep the bore and plate dovetail greatly simplifies the installation, but is not absolutely necessary. whether rivet or screw, the holes drilled in the receiver must have close to zero clearance in them! loctite is a must, is using screws. the bulgy vs. rus is a non-issue...both are the same thing, only different (if you get my meaning). of the two installation methods, i prefer the rivets. i feel it sets the plate tighter and less prone to shooting loose. |

" How does one peen the back side of the rivets?" one doesn't. that inside head of is 'bucked up' with a bucking tool. the rivet is formed on the outside. "Do you want the top of the mounting plate or the middle of the plate level with the bore axis?" after lightly deburring the edges of the dovetail, rough clamp the plate in place. slip a rod thru the barrel and level the rifle using the protruding ends of the bar. clamp the rifle up snug after leveling the bore. then, tap the optic rail with a plastic headed hammer while indicating on the upper dovetail grove (which is parallel to the bottom one within a couple thou, anyways). after you have the rail leveled and securely clamped to the receiver, a transfer punch is used to spot/locate the holes. i use a centerdrill, in a mill, to start the holes...then drill onsize. if you go a little too big on the rivet hole...no biggee. the rivet 'fills' the hole if properly set. |
