I've got an Arsenal AK without a side mounted scope rail and I'd like to get one mounted.  I realize the easiest thing to do would be to purchase one from K-Var and have my local gunsmith install it but I'm just wondering if I have other options.  I'd install it myself but I don't have a riveter and most of them use rivets instead of screws.  I've seen one or two rails with screws but don't know if I trust them.

Is having my local gunsmith installing it my only real option?

this was years ago ,something like 12 years ago.  but, I bought a optics mount from TANTAL that was  threaded and came with 2 bolts  that you screwed in from  inside the receiver.  worked very well and I did  the work myself.  I have since sold that gun, again years ago, so i can show any pictures, but the end of the bolts came uo  was flush with the mount. I don't know if he stills sells them or not. you will have to check his website

Tantal retired from the retail biz.  His daughter Kristine is now selling the very same threaded MPK2 rails on her own website.  Link

That looks promising. Now the real question is, how reliable is it?  Do you think it would be as stable and dependable as a riveted model?

The MPK2 has a good rep, I haven't seen or heard of anyone having an issue with them.

I have installed three of them, all on Yugos.  Yugo rail selection can get a little complicated and the MPK2 was a good solution for me.  Several years and thousands of rounds later, I have never had a single issue.  I know I am not alone in that regard.

I would not attach MPK2 rail to Arsenal rifle. As a matter of fact I would not use it on any rifle.
MPK2 is one-size-fits-all rail designed for a quick-n-cheap fix.
You have better options.
There is a reason you will not find them on Bulgarian Arsenal, Russian SGL or Romanian WASR.

Well, I think the reason you won't find them on any of those rifles is because it's an after market item designed to be self installed by nongunsmiths.  The real question is does it work as well as a factory installed rail?  Is it as stable as a factory installed rail?  Will it accept the same mounts and hold them as well as a factory installed rail?

I have 10 AKs with rails, 7 with factory (riveted) rails and 3 with MPK2s.  All of them have optics of some sort (I'm an optics junky).  Absolutely no difference in performance between the two.  Tantal sold a shitload of the MPK2s, plenty of satisfied customers out there.

Would these MPK2 mounts be a good side mount for a Maddi, MHN-91 and Norinco?

I have really wanted to mount a sope on the MHN-91 and see what it could do with handloads!
