I just wanted to intro myself since I've been lurking and enjoying the posts this past week. Seems like a very knowledgable group. I'm retired Navy. I was a nuc plant mechanic until a local welfare queen ran into me and made me a disabled veteran ten years ago. But the VA sent me to college and made a machinist and welder of me. That was fun. And I have a pretty decent shop full of euipment. But I can make a better living as a self employed motorcycle upholsterery mechanic. Go figure. So that's my main job now a days. I've been wanting to get back into shooting. But my teenagers are still eating me out of house and home, so I need to keep it inexpensive. I like Russian stuff anyway and have ridden Ural and Dneprs for some years now. My present daily transport is a 2003 Ural Retro sidecar rig that I've heavily customized. I built the sidecar body from scratch from steel. Hand planished every curve! That was fun. From what I see of the folks here, it looks like I'm in similar company when it comes to building stuff. I've already bought a Ewbanks built AKM with black poly grips and stock. It looked like a nicely made sport gun and the price was fair. I'll soon be out at the local Navy Base's Marine camp trying it out on their range. They let us retired squids shoot from 1200 to 2000 daily for just $8. They sell ammo too. Pretty good deal. I have a Romanian kit on the way. Eventually I plan to build my own tooling to try making my own reciever from a blank. But I want it to do it legal, so that's why I've registered here. This seems like the place to get good info. Besides, I have relatives who are Feds. I don't want them coming to visit for the wrong reaons! I want to get a SKS soon as well. You can get the stored, covered in old grease good condition ones here for about $100. $150 for a really primo one. They look like they'd be fun to refinish and plink with too. I won't bug y'all with questions quite yet. I have plenty of archives here to pour over first. I know it's annoying when newbies want you to re-type everything for them. hanks Sidecarnutz |

Thanks Guys! I saw the article with photos of the bending jigs and stuff. Right up my alley. Awesome article by the way. I have a mill, lathe, 12 ton press, sand and bead blasting, bandsaw and gas and MIG welding here. Lottsa toys. Building a good rivet setter should be an evening of fun. Heat treatment? Yeesh. As a ex-nuc plant mechanic I'm a careful bastard. I'll have to do research there and then build what I need and try it out and check final rockwell hardness. My usual thing is to sit down and start reading everything. I'm the kind of geek who can memorize tech manuals in a sitting. Then I start building, experimenting, etc. Gotta find what works and what doesn't. BTW. I was looking at the Tapco site. Man! That is some cool stuff. I wanna put one of them there laser thingies and a flashlight and maybe even a tritum night sight on mine. I was thinking that plum and green and black poly furniture would be a distinctive look for it also. Maybe a cup holder for my drink too! Won't see another baby like that at the range! What do you think? hat Sidecarnutz |
That sucks! As an ex military you should be able to use the range for free or a lot less than $4 an hour! A buck a day just for kicks would be a lot more on par! Anyway, nice to see you on board! I used to lurk around here till I wised up and went semi legit! |
| Welcome. There is a ton of information in the stickys up top that have helped me on several occasions, but other questions are great too. Thanks for your service, and I'm sure we will be seeing all kinds of fun things you are doing, since you have a lot of tools and some some real experience. I just wish you lived closer! |

Actually that price doesn't suck at all! Private ranges go $20 to $30. It's all relative! Here's the address for my seat business if you want to see my rig I built. There's a diary there of it as well. But its a free yahoo site. It'll shut down when too many folks access it per hour. Just try back later when it's less busy. http://www.geocities.com/rgmaund/RichsCycleUpholsteryHomePage.html?1069633040109 And, I don't plan to get a paid site with more bandwidth. I fill small niches in the motorcycle market! I plan to stay a small shop. Its not like I'm going to get younger or more energetic. The photos in the Retro diary of the sidecar in bare metal are pretty cool. I've built 1/4 scale RC airplanes. Making the sidecar was kind like doing a partial fuselage. But in steel instead of spruce and coverite cloth. The now defunct NARMA Club site has pics of my Dnepr from back in the 90's. I was member #9 if you want to see it there in the membership registry. http://www.sheldonaubut.com/narma/narma/index.html I think it'd be great fun to drive my Ural rig to the base range for target shooting fun. There's nothing like being able to combine hobbies! Sidecarnutz |
